Fishing continues to remain good on Bear Lake for cutthroat trout. The spawning run of fish continues but has begun tapering off. What this means is there will be a lot of hungry, adult cutthroat trout cruising the shallow waters for a few more weeks. The cold weather this spring in the Bear Lake valley has allowed shallow waters to remain colder than normal and cutthroat are still be caught by trolling flat lines in water along the shoreline areas at depths of 7-20 feet. Shallow or mid-depth (8-10 feet) diving crankbaits have produced the best results. Lures with rattles in them have been producing better results than those without rattles. As the water begins to warm up try faster trolling speeds. Start at about 1.5 mph and if that doesn’t produce any stikes, then increase your speed until you start to catch fish. Trolling as fast a 3.5 mph has been working well on the warmer days. Consider using side planers in the shallower waters to help to get the lure away from the boat. Although this method is not very popular on Bear Lake it can be very effective.

Don’t overlook trolling for lake trout in this spring/early summer period. Target these fish at depths of 30-60 feet right on the bottom. The best luck is coming by those anglers using downriggers to get the lure as close to bottom as you possibly can.

Good spots to try for either cutthroat trout or lake trout include the west side of the lake between Swan Creek and Fish Haven Creeks. Cutthroat trout will be returning from their spawning runs to the lake from both tributaries. Be aware the mouth of Swan Creek is closed to fishing until 6:00am on July 8th. Along the east side of the lake try in the area of the scout camp northward to South Eden and also along Cisco Beach/Rainbow Cove area.

Boats can be launched at the Utah State Park Marina, First Point ramp, or Rainbow Cove ramp. Finally, for those anglers without boats, try shore fishing off the Second Point and Cisco Beach areas and off the dikes at the Utah State Park marina. Try early mornings or evenings and cast spoons or deep diving crankbaits to deep water and retrieve them so the lure is close to, or bumping the bottom.
