Jordanelle
#1
Spent the afternoon fishing up at jordanelle with bassrods and my girlfriend. The fishing was pretty good for bassrods he ended up with about 25 fish. We didn't do as good, we both managed about 5-6, but we are still learning how to fish senkos. However, my girlfriend managed to show us all up when she landed a nice 19 inch bass.[Wink] Green senkos were the main producers for us today. With a few fish caught on gulp minnows. The main lake was really windy, so we mostly fished the rockcliffs arm. Alot of smaller fish came from there, but there were several 13-16 inch fish caught throughout the day. Overall a great day[cool]

Is there still a lot of debris in the rock cliff arm? It was really bad a few weeks ago.

Sounds like you had a great time. When you all came in to the Rock Cliffs ramp at about 6:00 PM for a "call of nature" stop, I was the guy fishing nearby with the 5 yr. old playing on the ramp. It was good to meet you. When you get the hang of senkos and other similar baits, they are incredibly effective up there. It looks like you got good instruction from the best.

I think I could use some instruction as well. After hearing about all the success up at Jordanelle, my dad and I went up last Saturday. We fished from 7-2 and caught a total fo 3 fish, all pretty small smb. I caught one on a 3" tube jig, one on a 4"yama.curly tail grub, and 1 on a black and silver spinnerbait with a twin tail grub trailer. I would like to think that location had more to do with our lack of success than did our lure choice or presentation, but there could probably be a fair amount of improvement on both. I always appreciate any advice that anyone has to share.

I think that you were right when you said it was location, but only in a way. There are tons of bass around the whole lake, but different areas respond better/worse to certain presentations. I can usually manage about 6-12 fish in two hours using yamamoto hula grubs on gradually sloping shorelines. Thats when I am fishing from a float tube or from the shore. However, when I go out on a boat, I only catch about 3-7 fish all day. I think it is because the stuff that I usually catch fish on doesn't produce as good on the steep woody shorlines that suround alot of the rockcliff arm. It seems like experimentation is the key. You just need to find what works for a certain spot. I already gave you one tip; hula grubs on gradually sloping shorlines, rocky is usually best for me, but you will lose hooks.Good luck

You talk about getting used to fishing the senkos and was just wondering how you do it? I picked up some three inch ones in rootbeer color. Do you fish them texas style, or wacky? any other info on how to fish these baits sucessfully at Jordanelle for the smallmouth would be great, thanks

Texas rig a weightless 5" senko and do nothing. Maybe a little twitch, or reel it up a little bit just to get it off the bottom. I call it my "do-nothing bait". Bury the tip of the hook in the senko just enough to keep it weedless. There are several ways to rig them, I find this one the best with all the possible snags.

We were fishing them wacky. I think the biggest thing I have to get used to is letting slowing down my retrieve and letting them sink down deep enough. Also, I have a hard time remembering that senkos "fish themselves". They are supposed to wiggle on the fall, I usually dont let them fall very long. I also had a hard time setting the hook, but that could be partly because there were alot of smaller bass biting.
