Pine Valley Fishing Report – 62lber caught!

Just returned from a long “Pioneer Day” holiday weekend in beautiful Southern Utah; Yea I know I live in Las Vegas but any holiday is a good excuse for a three day fishing weekend! The weather was fantastic for a desert rat - scattered T-storms & soaking showers with sunshine & humidity. Wow! The only negative was falling pinecones. Ouch. If you are used to 3-4 inches of rain a year then any storm is fun. If you do not like the weather in Utah just stick around it will soon change. The fishing did not change. We caught a lot of 12”-14” planter rainbows in the reservoir. They took Jake’s, Yozuri minnows, orange, rainbow, & brown trout pattern Panther Martins, Woolly buggers, & Irresistible. Worms were best (my wife’s Midwest heritage!) Jeff hooked our English Setter in the Tongue. He took a #16 Copper John.
Mr. Hockey was admiring his back cast when Hunter (who is always hunting) noticed a green bug flying back & forth over his head. Well he jumped 6’ straight up & got the surprise of his life! I hear “Vince, I hooked your dog”. I look over & Hunter looks like he is trying to get peanut butter out from under his Tongue. The wife starts crying immediately & I have a sick feeling in my stomach. I ran over there & try to hold his mouth open. He promptly bites me & I start bleeding like a stuck pig (the blood looks cool on my waders; I might not wash it off.) Jack soaks his boots crossing the stream to help. Jeff suggests the stick in the jaw trick to hold his mouth open (that’s why we call him Jiffy Jeff) & keep Hunter from chewing off our hands. At this point I am envisioning a fast trip down the mountain to find a vet & other worse scenarios. We get his mouth open & there is the fly stuck in the top of his Tongue about an inch back from the end. Out comes the Dr.Slicks. I clamped on & gave a great tug! The thought ran through my head that this could have a bad ending. Having learned from experience that tender tugging when hooks & lips or cheeks are involved – just does not work. Out pops the fly. That dog never made a peep. I am going to miss that hound.

Vince, too bad about the Pup, bet he pulled better than those stockers.[Wink]

I get my turn in about 10 days headed to the eastern sierra to break in the new camper.
Thanks for the report, get any photos?

Thanks for your concern. The pup is nunworse (it even hurt to type that word!) for the wear. Still chasing that extra protein on the wing. that Thinking about a trip to Navajo, never been there. Anyone know if there are any nice spots for a stout tent trailer & the rest of "Camp Gopher Beer?"

Thanks

Dear KURVE,

Pine Valley is through St George, past Hursts & up 18, a little past Veyo go right. Easy 3 hrs from Vegas. Very small reservoir, stocked often, hard to get a good site in the trees as they allow saving & the "overhomers" send someone up during the week to get a site. But it is very pretty with a stream with small Browns & Rainbows in it. Little kids are safe goofing in the stream, right next to your site if you get one. There is overflow in the Horse area - bring shade. You can fish with bait. ice is 30min. away in Veyo. All the people are nice.
