Rusty Lures???

So I went and raided my dads shed and found a bunch of rusty panther martin lures that haven't been used since before I was born. Are they any good all rusted?

Oh and as for gear... we got jigs & jig heads(which I had no idea what they were until I went to the store), a new panther martin, 8 lb line, red and white bobbers, some hooks, some worms, a spin a lure, some power bait (the associate said there are some trout in Mantua so we thought we'd try) and hum... I think that is about it. Any other good suggestions... I saw salmon eggs on the other post. I'm going to the store one more time before we leave so I can round some more stuff up.[]

O.k... another question (I am full of these). For lures, like panther martins, is it a good idea to put worms on them as well?

Oh.. and reading back through we forgot weights of any kind. So I'm gonna go get some "split shot weights"... any other ideas?

I'd say this,, as far as the old spinners you might want to slip on Ebay and try earn enough and stock your tackle box,,, lol.. OK,,If not, they'll make good practice gear.. And if you dont bother to swap the hooks out before using them you probably wont have to worry to much about handling any of those slimies (as my G-daughter refers to fish).

Ok next on your list of needs, (and its up to you to convince the other half of it, if that applies),, a 18'+ Crestliner loaded to the gills and push by a couple hundred hp.. That should get you around most of the ponds in this state []

[cool][#0000ff]Most hardware stores and building supply places sell "metal tarnish remover" in small cans. That helps clean and polish tarnished spinners and spoons. But, as Coldfooter pointed out, you should be sure the hooks are replaced if they are rusty. Can't restore a rusty hook.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You CAN put a piece of worm on a spinner hook, and sometimes that really helps. But, you would be surprised at how fish whack spinners and lures without any extra added attraction.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Another bait that works well for the sunfish and perch in Mantua is mealworms. They are available and inexpensive at pet shops, like Petco. Keep them in the refrigerator between trips and they keep well. Use a small piece on the tip of a jig...or a whole one on a plain hook. All the fish like them.[/#0000ff]

i have found that rusty hook and or rusty lures in the water seam's to repel fish more than anything.. i dont know if it put's off a bad odder like me [shocked] or what but if you can replace the hooks you would be better off..

and try and keep your gear in good working order makes for a much better trip!

Thanks for the advice on the rusty lures. We'll swap the hooks and see if that does any good. If not we'll just keep them to make our tackle box look full. []

Thanks for the mealworm advice too... I'll probably pick some up. We're going to be there all weekend so I want to have a variety of things to play with.

I'll let you all know how it goes this weekend. I think with all the help we've got it should be a great trip!
