Willard smallies and GPS
#1
I think I might lay off a day this week and hit Willard. I will definately chase the wipers but would also like to hook into the smallies. Any suggestions on where to start fishing for the smallies? I'm sure I can find them and I know you won't tell me your secret spot but just a point in the right direction would help.

Does anyone have GPS coordinates for the island at willard? I've heard about it but have never been able to locate it. (Too busy fishing [cool])

Good luck, and let us know how you do.

TD has been catching alot of dinks around the s. marina. I caught some nice ones years ago in the ne corner and north dike area. Good luck keeping the wipers and cats off trying to get one though. The cats are being extremely agressive the last few weeks, chasing everything we throw in the water.

I've been wanting to do the same thing but it'll be kind of hard to ignore the wipers if they're boiling.

If you can launch your pontoon without a ramp then you should be able to fish the North dike. It's cheaper than going into the marina, $3 versus $9. After reading fishinfool's report you should be able to find some active fish between the North dike and the North marina. When you get off the freeway, instead of turning left to go into the north marina, just go straight down the dirt road that is slightly to the right of the entrance to the ranger station. They have a little parking area there and it is a short walk to the water. I hope this helps, let us know how you do. WH2

[cool][#0000ff]Flycasting and I have been fishing inside the north marina from our float tubes and getting both cats and wipers. The wipers herd shad up against the far east side of the marina several times a day and they cruise back and forth along that bank in 8-12 feet of water. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Drive around to the Southeast corner of the marina. There are parking spots and covered picnic tables, and you can easily drag your toon down to the nice sandy beach to launch. Some of the best boils are right in that corner and along the entire east bank.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]For the boils, fish a full floater with a big white crystal bugger or streamer. When the fish are down, use a medium full sink line, make a cast and let it get down near the bottom. Then either kick along slowly or strip the fly fast back up through the water column to get a reaction bite.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There are two sizes of shad the fish are feeding on. One is just about two inches long...this year's hatch. The other is just over three inches. They are a pearl color and we have been doing well with pearl shad bodies.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]When the fish are boiling all you have to do is smack a fly down near an active fish and it is game on. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As has been suggested, you can also launch off the sand at Eagle Beach. But, I usually drive in the campground and go around to an access point at the far northwest corner of the campground. You can unload your toon next to the water and launch it through a break in the shoreline trees. Then drive your car around and park up on the levee. If you do not have an annual pass, it is only $3 to park up there, versus the $9 in the main park. It is a short walk down from the parking area to where you left your toon and a short drive...so there is little danger of someone getting into your stuff...especially early in the morning. When you get out, just walk up to the levee, get your vehicle and drive back down to that spot on the campground. Unless you camp there they will not hassle you for payment.[/#0000ff]
