Dan,

I wish it was me. I am also getting ready to start hitting it. The weather is cooling down over here and I am really excited about the fishing this year. Years past, I have been confined to fishing it from the shore.

However, this year I will be able to do some trolling. Hopefully, I can get the elk hunting out of the way!

Good luck, and let us know how you do.

[red] I used to go on the Elk Hunt every year, but can't seem to find the money to go as much any more. Besides I would like to hit Bear Lake early this year and a lot more. I have a better truck , so I can make those climbs easier now. I want to try trolling it this year.[/red]

Here is a copy of the report for Bear Lake from the UDWR "hotspots" homepage. Wish I had more to report, but there really hasn't been a lot of pressure from anglers. The good fishing is right around the corner. As cadresults said the weather is cooling down on "our" side of the hill.

Fishing Report for Bear Lake
Friday, September 1, 2006

The surface water temperature at Bear Lake is 68 degrees. Fishing has been challenging on Bear Lake these last few weeks. The warm surface water has driven the fish deeper. There have been a few reports of anglers catching cutthroat trout and lake trout by jigging with tube jigs tipped with cisco meat in 85 feet of water off of Rainbow Cove (just north of Cisco Beach) and off of Second Point on the east side of the lake. The morning temperatures have been quite cool this past week and the shallows should be cooling off enough to attact cutthroat trout in during the early mornings. Try trolling with spoons and small rapalas in the shallow water at day-break. Once the sun comes up and starts warming the water, the fish will head down deep for the remainder of the day. If you are trolling in the shallows, consider using side planers to help to get the lure away from the boat. Although this method is not very popular on Bear Lake it can be very effective.
The lake level has dropped just over 16 inches from the high mark in June and boats can still be launched at the Utah State Park Marina, First Point ramp, or Rainbow Cove ramp. Finally, for those anglers without boats, try shore fishing off Cisco Beach where you can easily cast to deeper water. Try early mornings or evenings and cast spoons or deep diving crankbaits to deep water and retrieve them so the lure is close to, or bumping the bottom. Longlining with cisco in the same area with the bait fished right on bottom in a depth of 80 feet or more is producing a few fish.

I just started using this. Maybe it will help. I think it is great using it with a GPS.

Dan, it won't be long now. The busiest tourist season in Bear Lake History. (acording to a friend that works for the parks service) is coming to a close. [Smile] I had my boat out of the garage yesterday and am getting it all cleaned up and ready. Plus I added a remote speed controller for my kicker motor. this is going to come in real handy. See ya soon.
