I don't know how many times i've watched the line on my reel get stripped off to the last wrap. Hopelessly waiting for that infamous "ting" as you watch your line zip off into the sun set attached to a tropy sized fish.
Alot of times when anchored off along a reef, especially fishing live bait on floats or kites, it's a race to get the anchor line up before your lite tackle rig meets it's doom. Many anglers, to include myself, use down sized equipment for the sake of sport and increased hook ups. The only problem with that is you sacrafice line compacity using smaller reels and tackle. Sure you can spool up with braid, but sometimes that's just not an option. So, how do you defeat the time demon and be able to get on the chase without the costly hassle of bringing up the anchor? It's easy, you won't believe you didn't think of this before.
On the end of your anchor line, attach a large marker boey so that it won't slide off of the end. I use a heavy duty chain quick connect on the end to attach the anchor line to the boat right after the boey. When you get a run and you know you've got to chase him down, simply unclip your anchor line from the boat and off you go. The boey will keep your anchor line affloat, and it unhooks in a matter of seconds, which proves to be useful when seconds can mean the difference between landing a fish, and retiring a rod and reel with no line left on it. Not only does it disconnect quick, but your anchor will remain hung, and all you do is ride back up to your boey, fish out the line and clip it back on the front. You'll be right back in the same spot, in the fish, and don't have to reanchor.
This is a Savvy trick that Vet anglers have been doing for a while. You never loose your spot, and you never loose a fish due to line capacity.[cool]
