[cool][font "Poor Richard"][green][size 3]How about sharing your ideas on this thread. Many of you have been tying for sometime and have come up with your own methods of fly tying techniques. That is a better and easier way of accomplishing a feat that might stump others. As an example [& I don't quite have the technique down yet] is how do you get your material to flare around the shaft? When I want it to it doesn't and visa versa. Sort of like in golf when I want my ball to slice it goes straight, and when I want to hit it straight - yup you guessed it. When i tie mice, i use strips of deer hair and wrap them instead of packing all that mess. It looks great when your done and the tiger muskies have no complaints.[]

One idea that helps me to tie flies is to keep a nail file or sand paper with my kit.
My hands are very rough and the file helps to smooth out the rough spots on my fingers. This keeps things from hanging up on my hands. Hand lotion also helps.
A cheep pair of reading glasses also help me tie small flies.

I use a few clips for holding materials. They hold the material lightly so that they are not crushed and bent out of shape but wide enough to quickly grasp material. They are a plastic clip used with temporary paper shades for windows. You might be able to find them at Home Depot. If you know of someone that has bought a new home they probably have some until they get permanent blinds or shades. The clips and shades are made by Ready Shade



I have also used an electronic test clip (not the Aligator type) to hold clumps of flash while tying. Some tiers use the test clips for a hackle pliers. Some of these clips have sharp edges which cut through the stem of the hackle so you may need to use a jeweler's file to take the sharp edge off the corners. There is one test clips that tiers prefer since they do not have the sharp edges but I don't remember the brand name.
