BEAR LAKE--FRI & SAT **Whitefish are starting right on schedule!**
#1
Ok, Friday didn't start off extremely well since I did the power-shopping thing with my wife at 4:30am on Friday in Logan, but after the carnage was over and my credit card melted from multiple swipes at ShopKo, I headed back over the hill to "sanitize" myself on the pond. I launched at 10:00am on Friday and talked to a couple of the BFT'ers on the rockpile via radio. Sounded like they were catching fish, but it was only fair. I stuck around the marina and was able to boat 6 whitefish in 3 hours. Pretty slow, but the whitefish run is just starting and it will only get better. By the way, I had a friend that jigged for cutts on the east side and between two of them, they caught 9 cutts and a few were pretty nice fish!.

On Saturday I wanted to try the east side for whitefish to see what was going on over there. I wanted to try my old whitefish haunts from the "higher water years" since this was the first year in 4 years that the lake level was high enough to cover the "spawning rocks". But before I left home at 7:00am on Saturday, I had my inaugural whitefish, eggs and potatoes for breakfast from Friday's fish. Yummy! I launched at 1st Point at 7:30 and fished to the north (I will not give away my exact spot since you guys need to do some of your own experimenting). The fishing was much better than off the marina. Probably because I was there earlier before the sun was directly overhead and there was a lot less boat traffic. In fact I was the ONLY boat on the water that I could see (from 1st Point north to South Eden). I really put the hurt on the whitefish using a 1/8 oz. black twister tail jig and a black and yellow maribou jig on an ultralight rod with 4lb test line. The bite actually took me an hour to figure out but after that it was pretty darn hot. The whitefish are just starting their run so they are not biting very hard. In fact the bite is almost imperceptible so you gotta pay attention and watch your line as well as your rod tip. I only used one jig at at time since it was easier to feel the bite and it was easier to keep from snagging in the rocks. All of my fish were caught in 8-9' of water. No deeper, no shallower. All were caught over rocky bottom and I could actually see the rocks on the bottom at this depth. I never marked one fish on my sonar, but hey...its only 8' deep. So boys, here is your chance once again to collect some whitefish for the all-important [#ff4040]palatability check[/#ff4040]. Let me tell you my palate says they are fine eating and I'm gonna need some more! The run should last from now until about the 20th of December.

BLF,

Great report, this is a great time to get out and fish. I caught my biggest cut a few years back, fishing for whitefish!

I am tempted to take my boat out and give it a try. I haven't been fishing or hunting for about a month (ouch).

Thanks for the update...

Brody,

You need to work a normal shift[sly] and come on over fishing this Saturday. Whitefish in the morning, jump shooting ducks and geese in the evening!

Scott,

I had cold cereal again!!!!!! I managed one white after talking with you and nothing on saturday or sunday. I launched the toon on saturday for a few hours and caught a monster carp (10+) and after that I could not buy a bite to save me. I think I was using too big of jigs this year.
