Cell phone coverage around Stawberry
#1
I want to get a new cell phone which has excellent service around Strawberry. If it works around Rockport, Starvation and Yuba that would be a bonus too.

Thanks for any help.

I know that my new digital phone that I got from Cingular does not work up there at all. The old analog phone I had with them worked over by Renegade and the marina. If you get a new phone make sure it is analog and digital and you might have some coverage up there in a few choice spots.

It sounds like Verizon or Nextel will work. I assume it depends on the service plan since one person stated they didn't get any coverage up there with Nextel and someone else gets coverage up there everywhere with Nextel.

I'll probably just get a verizon plan unless anyone knows a good reason to join Nextel over Verizon.

Thanks again for the input so far.

[cool]I had Nextel and their coverage sucks, their phones are ancient, and when your friends are calling you they usually get a message first that says "please hold while the nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located." Really professional... Also, we didn't save any money by going with them. At first when we signed up we thought we'd use direct connect (walkie-talkie feature) which was free a lot, but we only used it for like the first week or so then decided that it was pretty annoying.

Now I have Cingular again, and love it, but about the only place I've found my coverage to spotty in so far is around Strawberry. It only works a little at a few small spots on the lake. Works everywhere else great.

Verizion will work up there with almost any phone but some of the other carries it depends on the phone. Even with Verizion strength of signal will vary from phone to phone. There used to be four different Verizion phones at my work and some had signals and some didn't in the same building same room.

Some of it depends on the phone. I have always had good service with Verizon it gets good reception wherever I like to go fishing with the exception of Bear Lake ( Good on the lake but none on the shore by the marina). That being said, I usually have coverage when nobody else's service does.

I'll most likey go back to Verizon because of its Strawberry coverage when my Cingular contract is up.

I've had verizon for years and have always had a good signal at the Berry ( either analog or digital). A couple of years ago, I did notice that that most areas on the lake, the signal changed from only Analog "roaming" to a true digital ( in network) signal. I would think that if you have a carrier that shares cell towers with Verizon, you should bee able to receive the analog signal up there ( AT&T cingular, Sprint), if you have a tri-band phone. I know for a fact, the standard Nextel walkie-talkie type phone and T-mobile do not work up there. Verizon plans tend to be slightly more than some of the other carriers, but in my opinion, their excellent statewide coverage is worth the small extra coin.

As someone has already pointed out, some of the new free and cheap phones being offered at sign-up are NOT tri-band or quad band. When you upgrade your phone, make sure your phone is at least a tri-band if you want to have the best possible cell access in rural areas.

[mad]I have T-Mobil and never have a problem, also works very well at rockport, I use T-Mobil becouse I travel alot, T-Mobil is the only international cell company it is owned by duch comunication (Germany) they own all there own cell sites and maintains them there self's, I looked into alot of different systems as a eletronic tech and FCC licensed radio (I own) just a little food for thought.[sly]
