This is not meant to be mean (well, maybe...), but more just an oddity I've noticed from the pics being posted in the Ice Fishing Challenge board.
Where are all the big fish????
I might be wrong, but just glancing through the pictures I can only find a few fish that are 20" or bigger. I understand that the perch, crappie, bluegill, whitebass, etc. aren't going to be very big -- but why isn't anyone putting a few more 20"+ rainbows, cutts, tigers, splake, lake trout, etc. on ice? The biggest I can find is about 23".
I love to look at pictures of fish. I'd love to see some recent success for some decent sized trout. Where are they?

I think there are a couple of reasons:
1. The one that stands out: Fishing Pressure. With all the publicity that our lakes and streams get now-a-days, this site being one of them, well it stands to reason that more and more people are finding out about our treasured hobby through this publicity...and catching more fish, which in turn puts a ton of stress on the fish population. More people fishing = less big fish.
2. the GlobalWarming issue. I think that as the climate gradually gets worse, several species will suffer, including our favorite little swimmers.

I guess we all stink at ice fishing.[shocked][ ](and haven't had nearly enough chances to go!)
BTW, how is the ice on Fish Lake right now?

[cool][#0000ff]There ya go, tryin' to get somethin' started again.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In fairness, we haven't had many of our big fish waters that have iced over and settled down. We have had lots of "yearling" rainbows from Scofield and East Canyon, and a few from Mantua. But, Jordanelle has not yet become fishable in the areas where we usually get the larger rainbows and browns through the ice. Maybe a week or two.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There have been a few hookups on tiger muskies, through the ice at Pineview. But, even with stout tackle it is tough to tame them. None have actually hit the ice that I know of. Kinda glad though. They cannot tolerate a lot of rough handling. Nice to lay them on the ice for a picture, but it doesn't improve their chances for survival after they get shoved back down the hole.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As you well know, there have been lots of decent rainbows taken from Otter Creek, but have not heard of any real bigguns like there used to was.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Also, have not heard any reports from Yuba. I understand the big rainbows are still in there, but the changing ice conditions have kept everybody off the ice. I hope to change that my own self within the next week or so.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There is one other factor. Not everybody has entered the ice fishing contest and not everybody posts pics of all their fish. I know of several big fish that were never formally reported because the anglers do not like competition fishing. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Question for you? What is going on at Minersville. I expect there are some decent bows to be taken through the ice there this winter...if it is not too deep in snow.[/#0000ff]

Fishound -- that's what I'm talking about. Nice fish. I dont' care if it's a carp or not -- nice fish.
Fuzzball -- greensunfish? Why would you even take a picture of a 6" green sunfish? I'm going to start calling you Ray Johnson. Heck, maybe you are Ray Johnson!!
Tuber -- I'm sure there are people that haven't posted pictures of their "large" fish to try to keep places quiet. But, I'm not talking about trophies. Heck, look at the tiger trout. 16"? Are you kidding me? Is that the biggest people are catching? That's not a slam towards anyone's fishing ability. I just can't believe that no one is catching larger tiger trout than that. (Ok, so a couple guys got some bigger than that - 18, and 17).
I know bigger rainbows are being taken out of Otter Creek. Nothing over 23", but still plenty of 18-22".
Minersville has been "typical". 1 day it's hot, the next it's slow.
I haven't been out as much as I'd like this so far this year. But, again, I'm not slamming anyone's fishing abilities. I'm just surprised at the size (or lack) of fish people are catching.
forget about the ice-fishing challenge. Let's head to Forsythe and get us a 20"+ tiger trout to post.

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Ron, you are the last holdout on resizing your avatar pic to fit regulations...no more than 150 pixels wide.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Let me know if you need help resizing. Otherwise, I will replace it with a dime-sized skunk picture. That stinks.[/#0000ff]

I'm on - I'd love to get a 20" tiger from Forsyth. Is there enough water to even fish there?
I'm planning on a Big Mac in Feb. - and, no, I don't mean "2 all beef patties", etc. [ ] Maybe a decent sized splake or two, too.

Cliff, cliff, cliff...
You'll have to do better than that.
re-read my other post. You'll find I already admitted to not getting out icefishing as much as I'd like to have so far this year.
like mentioned previously, I'm not dissing anyone's abilities. I'm just surprised at the relatively low number of bigger fish being caught so far this winter.

A few years ago I was driving along the McKenzie R in western Oregon. I saw a small rest area, and pulled in for a potty break. Inside the potty, someone had scraped an arrow above the pit, pointing downward. And the word "Free brown trout. No limit."
I still laugh at this one.[ ]
