Porcupine Arctic
#1
My boy and I were privileged to meet up with Mike (neveronsunday) and his son at Porcupine.

We might as well have built igloos and looked for penguins.

It was so cold (-7*) that the fish were hibernating. Nada. Zip. Not a good way to ice fish a pond for the first time. We were only there for 2 1/2 hrs before we'd had enough. Got tired of scooping out the ice from the hole every 3 minutes. Not sure I'll head back anytime soon. The only bite I got was one named 'Frost'.

It was great to meet Mike though, and watch the kids having fun dodging rocks as they attempted to ride their sleds down the dam. I scored a bunch of hand-warmers from him, and enjoyed his company.

All in all, not bad for my first time being skunked on the ice!

IFG were you catching trout,Kokanee, or a mixture? I'm planning on heading up Sat. in the A.M. I'm usually after the Kokes. Thanks for any info.

I was up there in the ice hut. We didn't knock 'em dead but we iced two big browns and five kokanee. Never did mark a lot fish on the finder except when the salmon came through 9 feet below the ice. We were fishing in 50 feet of water, and caught the brown trout at 37 feet. I wish I knew you and the kids were that cold I would of invited you in the hut to warm up. Ever see a guy in a bright orange coat, that's me. Come say hi.

I haven't fished for Kokes before and would like to give it a try. What is a good bait/lure? From what I have been reading on here it sounds like they like to suspend not too deep under the ice? In what depth of water can you usually find them?

Thanks for helping out a cluless old man. (Birthday was saturday... it's getting depressing!)

I generally find them in the middle 1/3 of the water column, but i have caught them right on the bottom too.
