There are several good Forest Service campgrounds (but I believe they are all closed during winter) all round the lake and with in walking distance of the shore line. The problem is that the shore line drops off very little for the first 50 to 80 yards until you get to the "shelf" which can drop almost straight off to over 100 ft. Also the shore line is very weedy so you won't want to fish on the bottom. What you can mostly catch from shore are the pearch and sometimes a rainbow or splake. (Of course right now you can access the entire lake from shore on the ice.) As far as wilderness camping, there is none that I am aware of within the fishlake basin. It is probably allowed to the south of the lake on the "Mytoge Mt. Road" which is about 4-5 miles away and to the north on the UM creek or "7 mile" road. Both of the latter are about 10 miles away but have some decent streams that hold fish.

The mouth of the river that feeds Fish Lake located just West of the main Lodge is an are that can be shore fished. The water flowing in keeps the weeds at bey and there are usually good reports around "ice out" for Rainbows and Browns in that area. Memorial weekend is normal "opener" for the area. Some of the cabins are open to rent all year and you can reserve them from Bowery Haven, Lakeside Resort, or the main lodge. Bowery (at least last time I was there) offered rustic cabins at a very reasonable rate. There is also a trailer campground ?KOA? at Bowery Haven with communal showers and restrooms. Ahh heck. It's easier to take this route. Try the resorts. Some are open during the winter and other are not.

I worked up to fishlake a few years ago. So I have a little knowledge of the place. I do know LakeSide does offer cabin rentals through out the winter, depending on how much you are willing to spend they have some way nice cabins that have every thing and then if you don't want to spend much they have cabins that provide the bare essentails. And to help out southernman they rent out 14 ft allum boats for some where around $40 for all day and they aslso have half day rentals. They even have two cabins that room twenty plus people so plan a big fish outing and have fun. to veiw every thing fishlake lodge has go to WWW.fishlake.com

ps: the big cabins rent out early so make reservations well in advance
