New Pending World Records for March

Here are highlights from the world records department of the International Game Fish Association of selected documented fish catches made across the globe submitted for world records. IGFA world records coordinator Rebecca Reynolds provided the following information on these recent submissions of nine potential records before the world records committee.

Fly-fishing off the Indonesia coast of Christmas Island, a territory of Australia, Dr. Jan Forszpaniak, Naples, Florida, USA, landed a wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) weighing 26.98 kg (59 lb 8 oz) on 6 kg (12 lb) tippet. He wrestled with the fish for 45 minutes in a location aptly called Wahoo Valley in the Indian Ocean waters. The current record of 57 lb 0 oz was caught June 13, 1995 off Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Casting a minnow plug in Tateyama, Chiba, Japan. Tamae Fudentani, of Saitama, Japan, landed a Japanese seabass (suzuki) (Lateolabrax japonicus). The fish weighed 4.60 kg (10 lb 2 oz) and was caught on 15 kg (30 lb) line class. It took her three minutes to land. The current women's record is 5 lb 11 oz caught Oct 24, 2005 in the same vicinity. In less than a minute Mitsuharu Nakayama, Osaka, Japan, may have landed a new all-tackle world record after catching a mebaru (Sebastes inermis) while casting a jig. The fish caught near Koza, Wakayama, Japan weighed 2 lb 0 oz (.93 kg). The current all-tackle record is 1 lb 12 oz caught Dec. 9, 1999. (Photo: mebaru - 07020010)

Using the lightest line possible while fishing Pinas Bay, Panama, Gary A. Carter, Duluth, Georgia, USA, landed a dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) on 1 kg (2 lb) class line and may beat a 15-year old record. It took Carter 10 minutes to bring the fish in weighing 26.39 kg (58 lb 3 oz). He's hoping to beat the current mark of 41 lb 8 oz registered January 13, 1992. (Photo: dolphinfish - 07020014)

Another flyfisherman Douglas Behrman, Tallahassee Fla., USA, also using 1 kg (2lb) tippet landed a 13.38 kg (29 lb 8 oz) red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) in 35 minutes while fishing Hopedale, Louisiana. The current men's record is 17 lb 8 oz caught July 13, 2005 on the Banana River, near Merritt Island, Fla., USA. (Photo: red drum - 7020023)

David Goodman, of Nantucket, Mass., USA, didn't have far to go for a possible fly fishing record for a white perch (Morone Americana). Fishing Long Pond, Nantucket Goodman's fish weighed in at .70 kg (1lb 9oz) on 4 kg (8 lb) tippet The current record is 1 lb 7 oz caught on the Connetquot River, NY, USA in January 30, 2002. Fly fishing Key West, Fla., USA waters, Dotty Ballantyne of Bozeman, Montana, USA, landed a king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) on 8 kg (16 lb) tippet. After a 10 minute fight, it weighed in at 17.91 kg (39 lb 8oz). The current women's tippet record is Feb. 20, 2005 also caught in Key West waters. (Photo: king mackerel - 7020020)

It took 55 minutes but Richard S. Avon, Manasquan, N.J., USA, was able to boat a Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) while trolling Los Suenos, Mexico, weighing 59.53 kg (131 lb 4 oz) on 4 kg (8 lb) class line. While trolling Willis Islands, Queensland, Australia Capt. R. T. Trosset, Key West FL., USA, landed a 73.5 kg (162 lb 1 oz) dogtooth tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) in 25 minutes on 15 kg (30 lb) class line.
