Don Pereira

DNR Fisheries Research<br />
and Policy Manager

Don Pereira, a senior fisheries research program supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), has been named as fisheries research and policy manager.

Pereira has served in a variety of fisheries research positions since he was hired as an assistant research biologist in 1983. His professional work has emphasized large lake management, walleye recruitment, treaty harvest management, aquatic habitats, double-crested cormorant impacts to fisheries, and the potential effects of global climate change on Minnesota fisheries.

"We are extremely pleased that we were able to fill this position with someone of Don's level of expertise and experience," said Ed Boggess, deputy director of the Division of Fish and Wildlife. "I am confident that he will provide the leadership and vision needed to keep Minnesota fisheries research among the best in North America."

As fisheries research and policy manager, Pereira will oversee 23 field research biologists and a fisheries biometrician. Their work forms the scientific basis for fisheries management activities from improving fish stocking to restoring aquatic plant habitat. In addition, researchers provide technical support on emerging issues such as climate change, ongoing habitat issues, and evaluation of special and experimental fishing regulations.

During his career at the DNR, Pereira supervised fisheries research staff at six field stations, including the Mille Lacs treaty biologists. He previously held fisheries research positions at Grand Rapids, Glenwood, and the Central Region in St. Paul. Pereira holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Vermont and a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Minnesota.

Jack Wingate, the previous fisheries research and policy manager, will retire in April.
