I'm going to Lake Powell on Sat. for the first time. We are staying about 5 days. It would great to get some fishing info but I would also like to know if there are any "must see" canyons or fun day hikes. You can p.m. with the non fishing stuff. I cant wait to catch something other than trout!!!...We are staying in Whaweap, I have a boat with LOTS of equipment!! Thanks JL

Jacksonlaker-
I have not spend a lot of time hiking around the souther part of Lake Powell, but I have been fishing down there 8 or so times in the last two years.
This time of year the fishing is hot! The easiest and fastest fishing right now is at the baricade in front of the dam. Schools of striper are cruising the rock cliffs searching the current for food. Use anchovies cut in 1/3 on a circle hook or a 1/4 jig head. Many are having just as much or more success tipping jigs with anchovie. Chumming is legal at lake powell, and it helps bring the stripers to your boat and gets them ready to feed. It is not uncommon to have multiple hookups at once on the same boat.
Please keep all the stripers you catch. There is a gross surplus of stripers in the lake and unless kept in check they will deplete the forage base (shad) and the striper population will crash.
Check out wayneswords.com it is an invaluable resource for fishing as well as Lake Powell recreation, there are seperate bulletin boards for fishing, and outdoor recreation. Posts your questions about hikes on the outdoor rec board and you will be sure to get some good info!
Good luck down there! I can't wait to go myself April 26-29

Look for Large mouth and small mouth in the flats around submerged brush right now and in the back of narrow coves with brush or reeds, try the points also. They are pretty shallow right now, Try tube jigs, Crank baits, have some fun with topwater plugs back in the coves around reeds and brush, I did really well on Maniac 5" salt sticks in green fishing over submerged brush in about 8 feet or so of water.
Just about anything is working well right now!
Have a great time!
