COMMISSION CONSIDERS ADDITIONAL MILITARY PREFERENCE DURING ALAMOSA WORKSHOP
#1
The Colorado Wildlife Commission met last week and approved draft regulations to change the wording related to Colorado resident military personnel stationed outside of Colorado. Colorado state statue previously allowed military personnel stationed in Colorado, but serving outside of the United States, to apply for big game preference points missed during their tour of service, as well as receive preference for leftover licenses. Senate Bill 07-195 if passed would allow the Commission to change the regulation to include Colorado resident military personnel stationed outside of Colorado and serving outside of the United States. The draft regulation is scheduled for final consideration at the May Commission meeting in Grand Junction. If adopted, the changes would be implemented for the 2007 big game season.

The Commission also directed Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) staff to conduct a review of current Commission policies. Some of the policies are outdated and contain obsolete language. In addition, the intent of some of the Commission policies has been incorporated into DOW administrative directives and regulations, federal and state law. DOW staff will work to update these policies, eliminating those that are redundant with regulation, directive and/or statute and updating those that are relevant to present-day issues facing the agency.

DOW staff will present the updated policies to the Commission in draft form during the next several Commission meetings. The Commission will direct the staff to make appropriate edits based upon discussion. Staff will present the final policy after the edits have been made. Public input will be taken at this stage, at which time the Commission can approve the final policy or request additional edits from staff based upon discussion and public testimony.
