[cool][#0000ff]For those who have never seen it...or who want to see it again...PBS Channel 7 is showing the documentary again tonight on "Okie Noodling"...at 8 PM.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Noodling is the fine art of fishing for large catfish with nothing but your bare hands. It is only legal in about 3 states...Oklahoma, Tennessee and Mississippi (I think). The primary target is the flathead catfish, which grows to huge sizes. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The fish taken by noodling usually run from only a few pounds up to fifty pounds or more. Bigger fish often win the battle and either drown the noodler or get free. They are tough and nasty, with serious teeth. Wacko serious noodlers usually have arms and hands covered with "fish rash" and lots of scar tissue.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In the states where noodling is practiced, there are also other underwater hazards to worry about. Water moccasins and copperheads are either on the bank or in the water. In some places there are gators or snapping turtles. Then there are beavers and muskrats that can chomp a pretty good hole in your hand if you grab one of them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you watch the program, you will note that the guys who do it a lot are not candidates for Mensa. Most of them look like they were used as extras for the movie Deliverance. What they lack in verbal skills they make up for in "terminal testosterone".[/#0000ff]
