I just got this little boat and it came with a 8 horse firestone outboard(1950's/1960's). It starts great but has a couple problems[unsure]. One is it doesn't keep feeding itself gas? I'll prime the hose and it will only use what I give it? Also it gets so hot that I can't pull the cord, and have to let it cool down? Any help would be most appreciated. Does air cooled just mean that the air blows on it or is it supposed to have a fan? I ordered a owners manual, thats all the info I could find on the internet? If no one knows I guess i'll take it to a mechanic? Again thanks for reading this.

sounds like the impeller might be bad and the motor isnt getting water to keep it cool. hopefully the head isn't warped. good luck.

we have an old outboard motor and we had the same problem. we would pump it and it wouldnt keep running except for what we pumped to it. We had to replace the gas hose. What was happening is that it was sucking in air instead of gas. so you could try it. a new hose with pump runs anywhere from 10 to 30 dollars.

Sounds like the motor is loosing is prime (vacum). Check the seals on the fuel tank and check the gas line for leaks.
Over heating is usually caused my a blocked or broken/worn out impeller. Try placing a hose with a water nosel on it at the bottom of the intake. Turn the water on (don't use to much pressure) and see if it comes out at the top. You DO NOT need the motor running for this. If no water comes out reverse the inflow. In other words force the water down the outlet to clear the blockage. You'd be surprised what can get into those cooling ports. Hopefully nothing has been damaged. If you can get a water flow try re-starting the engine (place bottom end in garbage can or other suitable container) and fire her up. If no water is being pulled into the engine (nothing exiting the exhaust port). Shut it off and check the impeller it will probably need to be replaced. Good luck and Ihope this helps.
