Sheridan, Ore. - Three local kids walked away with a free Zebco Ready Tackle Spincast Fishkit at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's (ODFW) free youth angling event at Sheridan Pond, Saturday, May 5.
The three rod and reel combos were provided from a donation by Bi-Mart. The winners were selected based on a guessing game of how many bobbers were in a jar. The three guesses closest to the number of bobbers without going over won the prizes.
"We're thrilled to be able to give kids their own fishing equipment," says Jeff Fulop, STEP Biologist for the North Willamette Watershed. "By giving kids the tools they need, we hope to engage families in the benefits of outdoor recreation."
The next free youth angling fishing event in the North Willamette Watershed will be held Saturday, May 12 at Commonwealth Pond, near Beaverton. Eight Shakespeare rod and reel combos will be given through a random drawing throughout the day.
This program was made possible through a $50,000 appropriation from the Oregon Legislature and a partnership with the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation, which has pledged an additional $50,000 and is working with ODFW to develop and promote youth fishing opportunities throughout the state.
Sheridan Pond is just south of Sheridan, Oregon.
