Deer Creek 7-08-07
#1
Hit Deer Creek at 5 pm for the inagural launch of the "Aluminum Dream". after figureing out i need to have gas in the motor for it to run, we headed to the west side of the lake across from the island marina. began trolling on the way over, couldnt get the motor to run well enough at lower throttle so we trolled at maybe 3 or 3.5 MPH with deep diving shad raps and a DT10 runnin 2 poles one for each of us.

headed towards the dam over 40 feet of water hitting 80 crossing some bays between points. DT 10 rod, BAM!! fish on. 3 pound bow' put it on the stringer. continued to troll that way in the "s" pattern untill we were across from the other launch ramp (name???) on the point of the wallsburg arm no other hits....i have a fish, my buddy is without. we turn around to head back its now 730 pm 1/4 mile after the turn around, i switched lures buddy now has on the DT 10 in a bleedin shad pattern (same one I had earlier) BAM...fish on!! reeled up another great bow' same size little shorter on length but had a beer gut to make up for it. nothing else rest of trip...we decided to head in as it was getting to be just before low light and we dont have the lights just the flashlight on board...motor sputters and dies...like it ran out of gas...not the problem.

sit for 15 minutes after marking a ton of fish on bottom at 50 to 60 feet motor wont run so we drop some bait down...nuthin... tinker with motor find out vibration has casused the lean/rich adj screw to shut it self off it tightened right up. set it back to pre trip setting...now the motor is too rich...SLC altitude, so back off a bit...lean it out...POW!!! fires on the 4th pull and we motor while we reel in the lines.......put put PUTTT POOF...motor dies...same thing.

after another 20 minutes we get out the paddles..."W" died down from not too bad anyways and its calm...we make good leeway except when the last of the power squadron shoots by our boat about 75 feet away, approx half of what they should be near the smaller vessle without being wakeless...we get some heavy rockin going and it makes a paddle hard to use but we get through and it calms out again...kids driving the boat looked like, oh well they saw my butt as I showed what they could kiss. I am not very curtious if you are not either. we decide to try motor, POW!! we have motor...runs well we get it dialed in it humms right along...for 100 yards and dies again..same thing...this time rich/lean screw has not changed...the motor just decided to run in ever shortening bursts with paddleing in between each one...we got 40 yards out of it last go round and paddled to the ramp, we hit concrete at 10 30. Oh well the wives were having a baby shower anyhow. we load up the F250 and head home to SLC, get there at 1130 and gut two fish.
it was an adventure.

my minn kota is going on the next trip, and the 49' Champion is going in for a tune up.

I had this motor running perfectly for 4 hours in my driveway in the ole garbage can at all throttle positions.....but put it on the transom and drop it on a lake....no worky. [unsure] very frustrating...i guess i need to find a newer used motor or a bigger lectric one. it was a 7.5 horse...i think i want a 9.9 or a 15...no bigger. ill have to tune up before i can replace though...but we caught fish, made it home the same night, and this trout tastes good...

I found an interesting thing about my 70 hp Johnson when I was at Willard the other day. I have always had trouble with it running at low speed. It will idle in the driveway or on the Lake in neutral. But in gear and slow speed it just dies. Makes it so you can't troll with it and it makes it hard to load on the trailer.

At Willard because of how shallow it is.I started out of the launch area with the motor raised up and due to all the wind I kinda forgot about lowering it after starting to fish. Because of the wind I also didn't switch to the little trolling motor. But the big motor was idling down and we were trolling about 2-2.5mph with no problems. When I finally realized that I had not lowered the motor I lowered it and it promptly died. I raised it back up and we trolled the rest of the evening without a problem. It didn't even die when I loaded the boat. (A first) I can't explain it, but maybe someone else here can.

I rebuilt my '92 Evinrude 90 this year and ran it at approximately a 25/1 ratio for the first couple of tanks to make sure that I got the pistons nice and lubricated during break in. I noticed a similar phenomenon. At open throttle, I was running hot enough to burn out the extra gas/oil; but just off idle, I was fouling my plugs because I wasn't getting a clean (complete) burn of all gas/oil - apparently from not getting enough air in the cylinder. Trimming the motor up slightly seemed to help drain the excess gas/oil out of the cylinder so that it wouldn't foul. Now I've just made a habit of also trimming up the motor when I'm up front using the electric as well. It keeps the cylinders clean and I don't have to worry about banging up my prop/motor.

One other little trick I've started doing is leaving a sparkplug wrench and rag in the boat so I can pull the plugs and check to see if they are wet. If they are, just dry them off and it would fire right back up. I haven't had an issue with it since the first couple of tanks (went back to closer to 50/1) but it saved me a couple of times.

I don't know if this will help, but it can't hurt.

I had the same problem with my old outboard. It would run all day in the tank at the shop but when I put it on the boat and ran it in the lake, it ran crappy. All I could figure was that it couldn't handle the load.I finally got sick of fighting it and got a new one.

Not a motor expert BUT- I wonder if the float level changes when the motor is on the bouncing transom? A barrel is straight up and down and isn't moving around at all?
When you tilt the motor the only thing you would effect would be the float level. Just Guessing!!!!

some times a a gas line will cause this problem if it sucks air, you might want to check the fuel line connector ends. also when adjusting air fuel mixture the motor should be in gear in a tank of water, it needs that load to be properly adjusted. later chuck

I had the same problem with m three cyl. three carb two cycle evanrude outboard.
I finally got it running in the driveway then adjusted each carb. seperatly and found the idle circuit on one was cloged so i had a friend rebuild all, then installed a good fuel filter in line.

the fuel i run is 25:1 ratio, the motor itself says to mix 9 oz of oil PER GALLON, its old i know but thats a TON of oil...some motor heads i talked to suggested running a 25:1 and see.

how bad is it to experiment with a few different mixes if the engine doesnt get enough oil for a few minutes? its all air cooled so the 40:1 i use in my gas trimmer has the same oil as my outboard because i already had the oil. could i try this or do you all suggest i run a smaller step first like kick to a 30:1 or a 35:1?

the fuel tank is on the motor and has brass tubing that "hard pipes" it to the carb. i did disassemble all that and push a wire through it just to see if it was clogged, nothing there.

i took the bulb assy. apart and checked the needle valve(??) that screws into the intake no plugged ports anywhere i could see, i found 3 the one into the motor and the ones on either side of the needle, the float seems to float okay too...i did tear the top off and replace the plug wire last fall, and i tested that too.....it gives a good spark even through a finger...got singed on that one, mental note get new screwdriver with insulated grips, i wonder if it could be as simple as my gas to oil ratio being a bit thick....hhmmm i wonder how much gas you need to add to 3 gallons of 25:1 to make it a 35:1 since I am out of gas cans......time to get my charts out... thanks for the i deas fellas!!
