More Fishing
#1
Posted this also on the Idaho forum cause in a way it is a report of a local res.
We met Pokymon up at the "D" in Malad, ID. Saturday morning. Was a little cooler (but still not cool enough) and a slight breeze when we got there at around 8 am. Put off setting up camp and headed straight to the water. NAUGHTA! it was terrible. I could see a few and had a couple of bumps. Fished till around 11 am then headed in to set up camp with all of us coming up empty handed.
The old man dropped a "Deptherm" down about 30' and water temp was in the low 70's...WOW!
I went back out around 6 pm and managed 3 good healthy trout on a Maroon/Black Gartside Softhackle. Awwwww, finally, the Skunk smell gone.
A storm blew through that was UGLY! about 60 mile an hour wind and swirls on the water, not to mention the White Caps.
Got up this Morning and head back out. Had a fish right out from the launch. I cruised up by the Dam with 250 grain depthcharge fly line and the Purple Nurple (the one I had caught fish on the night before) Not bad, had 6 nice trout with nothing under 20".
Then headed to the trees at the other end for a little deep nymphing. Threw on a 20' leader (straight 6lb P-Line flouro), put my slip indicator at about 19' and a Zebra Chironomid on the bottom with a Green Chironomid at about 17'. Lowered the line and BAMB! I probably caught 20 in 2 hrs. They were hitting before the line got all the way down....NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

My camera was still sitting on the coffee table at home so no pixs on this one. And the old man is still a little nervous to take his new camera out on the tube/toon

Glad to hear the "D" was good to you. Do you think there will be a healthy population of trophy's next year? Last time i fished it it was littered with football 17"er's. Hopefully they grew up some since then. If you make it up again anytime soon, try a sheep creek special fished just like a streamer but with a slow retrieve. It has been killer for me the last 3 or 4 years.[cool]

Mac...you will not believe this. The camp ground is un-improved, so a lot of weeds (with those burs that just love to stick to Elvis's feet) and we were on some BIG rocks along with them being all over the place.
There is a good incline from the shore to the lake so we backed in so that the back of the trailer was a lot higher than the front to get it level which made for a big step out of the trailer.
AS SOON as we got there, we pulled the generator and the Ice chest out of the trailer. I was in the process of pulling the ice chest out, but when I stepped down out of the trailer, I found a huge rock. My left foot came down side ways. Heard a pop and fell backwards. Landed on my bumb then back.....on MORE ROCKS!
Thought for sure I broke my ankle, but the pain went away kinda fast, so Mojo helped me up and with a little pain I could walk. My sisiter in-law had an ace bandage (thank God) so I wrapped my ankle and was good to go. My tail bone and butt however.....Ouch!. Hard to walk and as far as bending or squatting....FAGEDABOUTIT! So right off the bat, I am in GREAT PAIN the whole weekend, but I managed to not ruin it for eveyone....today....LEAVE ME ALONE!

Lunker, we were commenting on that same thing about the fish. Last year you had to work hard to get a 20" with that being the limit. But, it does look like they are starting to turn around again. Thanks to C&R the fish are getting bigger, plus a quick release (with the Barbless law) in this warm water is a must. I think it is on the road back. Plus the water was suprisingly High. Couldn't see any of the trees in the water.
I remember the days of the 24"+ fish in there and I think with good management, we will get there again.

I have to agree. They fight the best and try that with a GLASS rod....holy cow, I could have grabbed the tip of the rod.

there should be because the waterskiers will slowly run the fishermen out of there and that will give the fishies more time to grow.

Your pike, musky, and walleye board moderator.
When I try to quote its not working.

If you ever get up here get hold of me and I think I could hook you up with some fiestier trout than those at the D.

The "S" is a small lake that really can't take the pressure so it will remain a letter.
