Music will fill the air this year at the Indiana Dunes State Park Kids Fall Funfest. Les Gustafson Zook, 2001 international autoharp champion, will perform his "Songs of the Pioneers" program, October 13, outside the Wilson Shelter, at 3 p.m.
The program is a fun, interactive and educational way to expose families to the songs pioneers sang as they traveled west. Zook will bring a carload of acoustical instruments to the Dunes, introduce each with some of its history, sing songs from the 1800s, and tie the whole program together with pioneer experiences.
"It's an amazing show to watch," said Brad Bumgardner, interpretive naturalist. "He can bring the crowd to their feet with his use of music and humor."
Zook's performance takes place during the annual Kids Fall Funfest, which will be held all weekend, noon to 4 p.m. CDT at the Wilson, Tremont, and Duneside shelters. While, Zook's program is free, visitors can purchase a $1 passport to experience the other great Fall Fest activities. Kids can get their passport stamped at each station and use it to enter the raffle for unique prizes.
Indiana vehicles pay a standard $5 gate fee upon arrival to the park. Out-of-state vehicles pay $10. Music-show attendees should bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult while attending weekend festivities. The program will take place inside the shelter in case of inclement weather.
