Rock Cliff Rainbows 11-2-07
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Tubed Jordanelle with Swedishfish for about 3 hours this morning. Launched about 7:30 at Rock Cliffs. Air temp a brisk 24 degrees in a light chilly east breeze. Water temp 49. There was a bit of mist coming off the water early, and we had ice in the guides until well after the sun hit the water. Cool.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Water levels are WA-A-A-A-A-A-AY-Y-Y-Y down. Could almost drive clear out to the mouth of the channel on the old road at the bottom of the ramp. Well...not quite. See the pics.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]A fun morning for spankin' slimers. Lots of 12 - 13 inch hatchery pets tearin' it up. They were jumping and swirling all over that arm of the lake. Started hooking them on my first casts with a small fire tiger spinner. Changed to a gold and orange spinner. They ate that too. Flung a bubble and fly rig, first with a big black "silver hilton"...then a large model of my version of a "California coachman". Didn't matter. They voted for all of it. Musta caught somewhere between 3/4 of a grundle and a half a bajillion. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We didn't have too long to fish, since Ryan had to be back in Salt Lake by about noon (fish hookey from work). So, after releasing a buncha feisty bitty bows I tried bottom bouncing for a perch...or smallie...or bigger trout...or whatever. Never did get over about 25 feet deep and did not see much on sonar. Didn't get any hits on vertical jigged stuff. Went back to bubble and fly and hung an acrobatic 16 inch bow, our largest for the day. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Swedishfish got to play with a fair number of the slimer-ettes too. I think I got him convinced that a bubble and fly rig is a good thing to have this time of year.[/#0000ff]

Now I put my tube away and got out the bow and arrows. I see u still tubing in pretty cold around you, I gotta ask what kind of "long johns" do u have? I just got the "Coldgear" ($49 dollars for the only top) and want to try that out to stop the moisture and keep my warm and dry after hiking in. It has the moisture transport system that every hunter says it is worth it and really works. Going to test that tomorrow while hunting.
Last weekend I was sweating and almost soaking wet inside from walking around to find sites to hunt with the climbing stand on my back and some of the hunting gear. I don't like getting the sweats and then being chilly all day from the dampness.
Nice area and those are nice fish for dinner!!!

[cool][#0000ff]I have several sets of thermal undies. Most are poly. However, since I get my neoprene waders with "stout" cut, with plenty of room inside, I often just wear a couple of pairs of sweat pants for layers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I float tube right up until ice covers all my favorite ponds. Some of the best fishing of the year is right before iceup and right after iceout.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]It was fun. Thought that you would probably have got some enjoys out of it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The water level is scary. I took a bunch of pictures of the exposed structure...for future reference. I am attaching one picture I think you can appreciate.[/#0000ff]

WOW.... I can't believe it's so low. We were spanking the perch on that flat a few months ago. [Sad]

[cool][#0000ff]You will be happy to know that the perch are doing fine. They have adapted to the low water nicely. They are now wearing running shoes. If you think they were hard to catch in high water, you should try catching them when they sprint across that muddy lakebed.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]They have also built little cabanas around the bases of those stumps. Kinda Sad the other morning though. Some of them have not received their heavy coats from Cabelas and were shivvering in the 24 degree cold.[/#0000ff]

Haha.

Did you find any of your lost gear on exposed stumps? I dunno how many jigs I lost there last November. [Sad]

[cool][#0000ff]I was busy fishing...not scrounging for corroded jigs.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I know the guy that makes those jigs so I think I can replace them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I'd be willing to bet that a thorough examination of all that exposed timber would turn up some hardware.[/#0000ff]

Since evening fishing isn't your forte TD I have negelected to post up. But if you are interestd in some bigger slimmers drop me a line. I haven't caught a bass or a perch in the last three outings. But have managed to pick up a couple of nice bows and browns with the ole trusty casting bubble and flies.

This darn court thing is killing any early morning fishing. Well I guess I could go for an hour or two. Come home clean-up and then got play at the Justice center. I'm hoping they will wind things up this week. I need a real break.

Pat, Glad to see that you are still testing out all of the Utah fishing waters nearby. I used to fish with a fly and a bobber a lot. It looks like I need to get out my flies and maybe tie a few more. How much water did you put in your bobber?
I can't believe how low the water is at Jordanelle. Are they letting water out for Deer Creek?

[cool][#0000ff]It did not matter how much water was in the bobber. I started out with it full, but the ones they make these days do not hold water well. Even half full they caught plenty of fish.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]They are not letting out as much as they were, but they had to dump a lot to stabilize Deer Creek water chemistry after it got so low.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Without a big snow year, those fishies are gonna be hurtin', and so with the fisherfolk.[/#0000ff]
