The river otter trapping season reopened in 2000 after a 30-year closure. Regional harvest quotas and personal harvest quotas regulate the season.
The river otter trapping season opens October 22 in the Southeast, Upper Snake, and Salmon Regions, and November 1 in the Panhandle, Clearwater, Southwest and Magic Valley Regions. The season closes no later than March 15 statewide.
This map indicates the status of each region for the 2007-2008 trapping season. The river otter season will close in each region 48 hours after the harvest quota for that region is reached. Trappers will be allowed to keep otters within this 48-hour period provided their personal quota of 2 has not been filled.
