Higher flows on the Willamette are quite conducive to backtrolling plugs for spring chinook. Just go to: https://secure.max.net/cgi-bin/sform/theguidesforecast.com/techrpt.shtml and order tech report #11- Backtrolling and Forward Trolling Plugs for Salmon and Steelhead and get busy catching fish!

The re-opener on the Columbia has produced sub-par results. It remains open through Saturday (4/19/03) below I-5 to Buoy 10 and then fishery managers will look at it again on Tuesday to see if we get additional time. There was a good bite in the Westport area and this has been one of the better locations for consistent fishing. Use herring here on the incoming tide and anchor fish with plugs on the outgoing.

The Willamette is a muddy mess but could clear enough by Sunday to produce good results. The best action lately has been at the head of the channel using plug cut herring or spinners. This also leave the boat angler the opportunity to run out to the Columbia for clearer water.

Watch where you anchor on the Columbia. Please be considerate of other anglers techniques. For example, Davis Bar across from the mouth of the Willamette has for a long time been a traditional trolling spot. Now, many anchor anglers have clogged the trolling lane when just a bit further downstream, Frenchman's Bar has traditionally been an anchor fishery. Please consider this when you choose your location.

The Clackamas has been slow for steelhead but should pick up soon. There continues to be a springer or two taken on the Clackamas and likely a small bunch will be in the river by Easter weekend. This is also true for the Sandy but better steelhead results can be found in the deeper, slower bobber and jig water near Marmot.

Although angler numbers on the north coast are really starting to drop off, broodstock and wild fish are still quite available. Some springers have been taken and with this current tide series, surely some more brutes will make their way into the fresh water down there. The earliest I have taken a spring chinook from Tillamook Bay is 4/14. Too early to get too excited however but you may want to combine a sturgeon/salmon trip or throw in the crab rings as well.

Sturgeon fishing has stalled on the lower Umpqua but springer fishing is holding up above Sawyer Rapids and Elkton. The Rogue River has been producing jumbo four- and five-year-old spring chinook to both boat and bank anglers.
