American Falls 2/27/2008 & state record catch

This is the catch of the day. I’ve caught several other chubs that are larger than this one and suckers that would also be very close to the state record but never decided to enter one until today. I've been debating whether I should enter a "trash fish" for a state record. Some would consider it an honor to catch a state record “trash fish” and others would consider it a shame. It was just over 14" long and went 1.38 lbs on a certified scale. I took it to the F&G office to get it verified as a Utah Chub so it could be entered.

I would say the perch bite was only about half as good as it has been other trips. The perch action was still fairly consistent throughout the day. Edge ice is getting worse with the warm temps and reservoir rising. You could still get on the ice without a board if you found the right spot. Some areas of the shoreline would have required a 10' board. Guys were still getting their 4-wheelers on the ice but they were using planks. Saw one guy get stuck in the shallow water with his 4-wheeler while trying to get on the ice.

This is the only trout I caught today. It was ?17"-18"? long and caught on a tube jig with a piece of perch meat. I also lost a fish that felt much heavier but they are always bigger when they get away.

Here are some of perch I caught today. I ended up keeping about 20 but I didn't keep any under 8". I only caught one larger perch today and it went a little over 11".

Hey congrats,
I think it's cool! I was thinking of doing the same thing. Somebody caught a new state record chub last year i think. but i remember being surprised at how small it was, i've also caught bigger ones. I think it's pretty cool to get your name in the books even if it is a trash fish!
But I guess since you already took the chub category, I'll have to try for the biggest sculpin, or shiner or something like that [Wink]!

Congrats on the new state record. I would have entered it. I have never really thought about how big the chubs I catch are. There are some pretty big ones in certain areas so gaurd your record carefully[Wink]

CONGRATS ON YOUR RECORD! I wouldnt be ashamed if I were you. I've never seen a chub that big but i dont see a lot of chub period. That looks like a nice healthy rainbow too without any black dots, woohoo. Never fished American Falls but its on the list of Idaho reservoirs to fish. Sooo many reservoirs and not enough time.[:/] Nice Post

I know my record isn't very safe if there is someone out there who really wants to break it.[blush] The only hard thing is finding someone with a certified scale who would be willing to weigh a chub.[Wink] I've caught a couple chubs in the past over 2lbs. I think if I could get a 2.5lb chub the record might be safe for a couple years. I'm guessing by this time next year someone will have broken my chub recored. Attached are a couple other chubs I caught earlier this winter. One of them weighed just a hair under 2lbs on my scale.

I can hear it now- "Hey Chubby" "It's the Chubster" " That's just Chubalicious". " Look- it's Chubarooni "
J/K. [cool] a record fish is a record fish.

Brian,

Congratulations. I have not had to struggle with the decision but have eyeballed all of the trash fish records (especially carp) and know that I certainly will go for it if given the opportunity. Actually there are several of us that have been stalking the carp record in our area here (S.E. Idaho) and have evidence that they are here (fish and game don't allow arrowed carp in the records but many over 40 pounds have been taken).

The only one that is border line is the "sucker" record due to the connotation that goes with it. I darn well will enter the chub if I get one and being of slender build don't care about the name callers. I have noticed most name callers and bullies to be on the large side of the line drawn around average so I guess that may explain it should someone feel inclined.

I also know there are state record carp to be had out there. I still haven't been able to get a clear answer on arrowed and snagged carp being legal. I've heard it both ways. I got a message and found out I still need to sign some paper work for the chub to make it official. I'll try to remember to ask when I'm there.

Jeff,

Near the back of the fishing regulations there is a list of the records for all game and non-game species.

Brian,

What I heard through somebody that tried to enter an arrowed carp was that using a rod and reel counted whether snagged or not. Apparently they consider bow and arrow more hunting than fishing. But you know how that goes. Rules depend on who you ask and when you ask so I look forward to what they tell you. My understanding was that the current state record carp was snagged.

I think your right about snagged carp being legal and arrowed carp not counting as a state record. I'm still going to ask though.

I think one of the more difficult parts of getting a state record carp would be getting it weighed. They are heaviest just before they spawn and I've had them spill eggs everywhere. A fat female carp could easily loose a couple pounds in egg weight alone. Not to mention the loss in water weight while trying to get it to a certified scale. I would also imaging it might be difficult to find someone with a certified scale that would be willing to let you put an egg spilling carp on it. Those carp eggs are a mess and have adhesive that makes them firmly stick to just about any surface.

Here is a link to the Idaho's record fish.

Jbalwindblkft,

According to the papper work I filled out for the chub record, the fish must be caught on rod an reel. It did not say anything about snagging. The paper work did say the fish must have been caught legally. It is legal to snag none game fish like carp so a snagged carp should count as a state record.

As far as the carp and arrow thing counting as a record, just shoot first and ask questions later.
I mean what you gonna do, put the arrow down, then cast and hope it bites, presuming you are convinced it's a record and it's hungry.
Oh and nice record by the way, I'd take any record given the chance. I would put the plaque right next to my others on my " I love myself wall". Lol, I really have one.

[/size]That is exactly what I would do. I've done it many times before. Carp always "bite" when I put a trebble hook the size of my fist in their side.[shocked]
