Hey, I'm just looking for a place to wet the fly around Pocatello, I'm not up for a long drive, idk...is there anything around here that is within a 5 minute range. I don't care if the fishing is slow, or almost non-existant, like I said. "wet the fly," thanks

I was walking with my family on the North City Park greenway section of the Portneuf last night, May 5. There were lots of fish eating on top. Caddis and Midges in the air. I have never fished the river in this location, logistically casting would be difficult due to the overhanging vegitation. I think there are more fish than one might expect. You could start where the concrete section ends and fish down from there.
I
also think you can find good fishing below Simplot before the river runs onto the reservation. I wouldn't keep any fish on this section due to the contamination from the holding ponds at simplot and the municipal water treatment facility. There are some big dudes in this section though, and you can't beat the proximity to town.

I see a few at the train tracks right before kraft road and alot fish the frontage by the sewer plant. but if I fished the port I'd hit the greenway one day and walk or bike it and see what stretches are fishable lot of river along the greenway. other than that you'll have to travel.

I would like to learn how to fly fish (I have only fly fished once and that was near Yellowstone with a guide) and I would like to know if there are any classes available at any of the fly shops or from whomever in the Pocatello area. Also, I noticed in this thread there a few places in Poky itself, but if I was willing to drive 20-30 minutes, are there better places that I could fish and gain some experience? Thanks!
