What kind of water are you fishing? Clear or murky? Shallow or deep? or both? sandy, rocky, mossy, gravel, etc. the list goes on.
In the summer a couple go to lures are spinnerbaits, topwaters, and stickbaits. Let us know some details and I'm sure we can help out. [signature]

I use predominantly soft plastics in the summertime, but most lures will work if you find the right areas and have confidence in what you're throwing. now is the time to be crankin', burning spinnerbaits, throwing topwaters, etc. fast-moving baits work better now than most times of the year. if you fish soft plastics - don't get caught up in fishing them really slow just because they're soft plastics. granted, you'll have to fish them slow sometimes...like if you've located fish in more open areas on a really hot day. for the most part, though, throw those fast baits and try and generate reactions!

For me it's Poppers in the am to senco type bait [Maniac's worms] to dropshotting deeper water. I'll throw a frog in the pads as well.

Top water baits in the early AM and late afternoon.
Vary your speeds of retreival to invoke reactions. As the water warms, take the baits down gradually. You can fish spinners or diving crankbaits at the 12" to 24" level. Eventually take it deeper. As the fishes food source goes deeper, your presentations need to follow the same pattern. Dropshots are effective at this time. The color of your presentation will depend alot on the clarity of the water and water temperature. Be prepared to carry a few different colors of particular lures.[cool] [signature]

As for spinnerbaits, you can retreive them at a speed that barely keeps the blades turning or fast enough to make a little wake on the top of the water. Try both and everything between.
For shallower water, get some Senko-style soft stickbaits (worms), rig them weightless and throw them around cover like docks or lilly pads or a fallen tree. In deeper water, you'll want some weight to get the lure down to the fish. A fish finder really helps in deeper water because you'll see if they are suspended or hugging the bottom. Since the weather has heated up, I've been rigging Senko worms Carolina-style and actually doing very well with LMB. [signature]

I would agreee with soft plastics (senkos, stick-o's, yum dingers, etc) - Match the color of the worm to the color of the water and the sky. Murky water and clouds go dark, clear and bright go light...
Spinnerbaits and topwater plugs (yozuri poppa dog, storm chug bug, zara spooks etc) during low light conditions such as dawn and dusk will produce fish. Try matching the colors to environment like senkos as well as bait around. If you hear frogs croaking try a frog color, if you see sunfish schooled up, or shad bait balls, try matching them. Good luck! [signature] |
