My brother, a friend and I went to Wyoming this last holiday weekend to attempt the Wyoming Cutt-slam. To those who aren't familiar, it is an attempt to catch all four native cutt-throat species (Bonneville, Snake River, Yellowstone, Colorado River) in their native water.
We started off in the Cokeville area. A friendly Fish & Game officer we met at a gas station pointed us to Salt Creek. It was around noon and the Prince Nymphs and Yellow Stimulators were deadly. Here we hooked up with a few Bonneville Cutts (6-10inch). Not big fish, but very uneducated which made for fast action.
After that we went up to the Grey's River. This is where we targeted the Snake River Cutt. These fish were a little larger (8-14inch), but the action wasn't nearly as fast. There were a lot of deer up and down that entire river.
The next fish on our check list was the Yellowstone Cutt. We chose the Wind River area to pursue this species. This is easily one of the most beautiful areas I've ever visited. The river was very swift, and clearly still experiencing heavy run-off. The fishing was tough due to the conditions, but we were still able to manage a few Yellowstones.
Our next destination was Cottonwood Creek (near the Green River) in search of the Colorado Cutt-throat. This was the toughest fishing yet. The water was swift and very deep. Not to mention the mosquitoes were truly unbearable. My brother was the only one fortunate enough to catch the Colorado Cutt and complete the Cutt Slam.
It was still an incredibly fun trip. We saw tons of wildlife including deer, antelope, elk, mink, black bear and even a wolf. We also saw Grizzly bear tracks in the mud on the Wind River. No doubt about it, they were as big as my head.
