[#6000bf]After finally making the decision to try and forget about work for a while, I have decided to make a trip to scout for a cow buff. I am heading down on the 16th. Probably stay all day and come back Sunday morning.[/#6000bf]

I had a friend hunt down there a few years ago and he said it was one of the toughest hunts he has been on. The beasts are wild, they live in rugged terrain, will run off of cliffs, and weigh a literal ton! The nice thing is that while in the open, they can be seen from a very long ways away. I hear that the early hunt they are more bunched up, so not as easy to hunt, but later in the hunt, and on the second hunt, they are in smaller groups. I've never been to the Henry's but from what I hear it's very cool country. The altitude is also high, so take warm clothes. Good luck, and let us know how you do when the season finally rolls around.

The big difference in the early hunt and the late hunt is how close they are to a road. Once the shooting starts they get the idea real quick and head for the back country[Wink]. There are plenty of roads on the East and South side of the mountains but on the West side there is one main road and one side road. There are higher elevation areas to check out but from what I remember, it is very hot there this time of the year. I'm sure by now you have a good map of the area so I'll get my map at work tonight and I'll let you know about a couple of areas that will be worth checking out. Were you planning on doing some hiking on this trip or just driving?

I wish I could but they have me on mandatory over time at work[frown], the only day I have off is Sunday. Here are a couple of spots that are worth checking out. You will need to drive down Notom road, also called the Burr trail, to get to the turn off at Wildcat mesa, continue down the road until you get to the split then go left toward Dugout creek and Dry wash. We saw a big bull at the top of this road but where I got my cow was at an area called Swap mesa. There are no roads there, so we went up the canyon, called Swap canyon on horse back toward an area called Cave flat. At one time they had this area open to ATV use but it was closed when we were there, it might be worth your time to check and see if they have opened it up again but some how I doubt it[:/]. When or if you decide to hike into the Swap canyon area let me know and I can give you more info about the area. I hope this helps.
