Panguitch Lake Sat May 10, 2003 (Report)
#1
I started out Fri for our BFT get-together at Panguitch Lake. This is a natural lake which was outfitted with a dam around 1900, with the last additions to the dam in 1942. 'Panguitch' means "big fish" in the native Pauite language, so it seemed a perfect choice for the big fish members ! Driving though cedar city, and getting on U-14, I thought, "man this weather is great, this will be a beautiful weekend." After driving about 10 miles up the mountain, (20 minutes) i started running into some snow flurries, after 12 miles, it was heavy snow! After 15 miles, cars were in the ditches and i was going 10 mph! I dogged it up the mountain in my front wheel drive hyundai, passing trucks stopped dead on the highway putting on their snow chains . .aaaahhhhhh. But finally i got to mammoth creek road, started going down in elevation, with no more snow, and the sky cleared . .yah! I got to Panguitch Lake, checked into Aspen Cove Resort on the water, and got to fishin! The winds kept picking up, picking up, then hedgesd showed up! He said i was prob the last to get through 14, it was closed, he went thru parowan and bryan head - U-143 - and made it through. He suggested we find a place out of the wind, and i quickly agreed . . we fished for about 2 hrs, nothing. . and the temp was dropping fast, and the snow started falling . . .we packed up, and within 15-20 minutes it was total white-out! Man the snow was blowin! HedgesD stopped on the road and pointed, 6 deer right off the road about 25 yards! We drove another 2 miles, he stopped again, more deer, right off the road! One jumped a fence, one crawled under, then they started jumping one by one over the fencerow . .I got a pretty good pic . .

so i turned in and wondered what saturday would bring . .

saturday morning was crystal clear, 18 degrees, and not a breath of wind . . .i went to one of the boat ramps, , ,started up the coleman stove for coffee and got to fishing . . .i threw jigs, wooly buggers, spinner, nothin . .the wind picked up and it was damn cold! I put on some powerbait and worm, and huddled up and drank coffee. Then hedgesd showed up again about 10 am - he said he barely got thru the night before, and it wasnt much better that morning . . he put on a nightcrawler too, cast about 20 feet from where i was at, and caught two sweet rainbows in 15 minutes!

then the X-MAN and his girlfriend showed up! They said they had arrived about 1 am, and found a place to camp . . .brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. But if you're prepared for it . . . he started throwin jigs, and got some short strikes. He said "I'm going for distance," and put on one of TUBEDUDE's spoons, he cast a country mile and quickly caught a nice rainbow!

here's some video!

Then in about 5-10 minutes from the same spot he caught an awesome fat bear lake cutthroat on the same spoon!

this pic doesn't do it justice, it barely fit his net! X-man - you're the man!

the wind died down and after lunch hedgesd and i rented a boat, and headed out . . .i still hadnt caught a fish! Hedgesd taught me the basics of trolling (never done it) and showed me the finer points catching a nice rainbow on a gold spoon . . .

then a cutthroat @!

Finally I tried a rainbow trout sinking rapala and caught a couple of 12-14 inchers . . . my first fish trolling!

now look at that beautiful sky! within 2 hrs it looked like this . .

it was total white out snow conditions again, although it stopped after an hour or so . . we got off the lake, outta the boat just in time to get hit with the first flakes tying up . .

well that was it! We were all going to Kolob Sunday, so hegesd hauled xxx to get off the mountain before the snow closed the roads again, and X-Man was camping at Kolob that night, so we all said goodbye to Panguitch Lake, see ya another time!!!

[red] Great report, looks like you had your share of weather all at one time. Well at least you got to do some fishing even if it did snow on you a little.Yoy know what they say. A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. I think you guys made out pretty good considering.[/red]

[cool]The deadly "Urchins" strike again. I received confirmation from Southernman that Xman was using one of my "perch urchin" variations...the silver with chartreuse eye. This was the lure he used to clean house at Kolob last year.

Just a 3/8 oz silver Kastmaster, with scale finish prism tape and a chartreuse eye. They cast a mile and plunge deep to reach the far off fishies when fishing from shore. However, they were originally developed for dredging deep and fast through the ice.

A good variation, for trout, is a gold edition, with hot red spots added over the gold tape. Kinda like a Jakes on steroids.

I've been playing around recently, with substituting the prism tape with multicolored silver and rainbow colored glitter paint on the silver Kastmaster. Haven't had a chance to test it thoroughly, but it has gotten some positive votes.

It was great one minutes and the next the storms and wind would freeze us to the bone. The drive home was horrible 5 MPH all the way form midway to the bridge over Coal creek. I slept in the next day hoping the roads would be better but when I headed up the moutain it was a crash derby. 2 inches of ice and cars and trucks all over the sides of the road. I spent 15 minutes for some joker trying to figure out how to get his truck into 4-wheel drive. I didn't want to throw chains on but looking back I should of slept in longer. Oh well those fish tasted good and it was nice meeting Xman and Southernman for a day of fishing.

Time to make plans for the next get together.

Ill ammend your post a bit tube. It was the perch urchin gold castmaster perch style reflector tape. and I cleand house on otter creek with the flash and silver kastmaster. But the gold did the trick for two fish on panguitch. Your stuff was 1 up on me compared to my stuff on panguitch. Only caught one jiggin hehe. a little side note my girlfriend caught the biggest fish of the day between us and i have pics but they are still comfy on the camera till they get developed ill post them later. nice fat 18 or so inch rainbow. real beauty (insert australian accent) haha

The first two I caught were 16" 17" and all the trolling fish were around 12-15. Southerman was giggling like a school girl with his first fish of the day but when he brought it in his Smile dropped because it was the little fish for the day. Who cares if it was small it was a fish, it fought good and made him happy. It fun to laugh about later and I'm sure Southerman made it much bigger when he was all alone with the new waitress.

Xman it good to hear she caught the big fish for the day. It always makes it worth the long drive. Let us know if you catch that crappie you want.
