August wahoo bite, SE Florida
#1
August is one of the hottest months here in South Florida, where hurricanes begin to build and big bad wahoo start flooding the western wall of the Gulf Stream, just a mere few miles offshore of Boynton Beach, Florida.

The wahoo is one of the fastest gamefish in the south Atlantic where it uses it's speed to run down fish like young tuna, bonito, speedos, goggle-eyes, flying fish and even young mahi or kingfish.

This 31 pound wahoo was caught while trolling behind the Lady K drift boat during a hot August afternoon. Trolling offers the best chance to land one of these fabulous gamefish, but they are also caught while drifting dead sardines or ballyhoo along the outter edge of the reefs in 180 to 240 feet of water.

The best lures to use for these fish are fast running plugs which can withstand speeds of up to 10 to 14 knots. Also, a reel spooled with wire line, 16 oz cigar lead, 25 yards of 100 lb. test mono, 10 feet of #8 wire and a red/black or red/black/orange Islander lure and bonito strip combo can be deadly on these toothy critters.

These fish will run out over 150 to 200 yards of line upon their first strike and are known for their ability to shake out hooks when given just an inch of slack. These fish are also some of the best eating fish found in the Atlantic off the Florida coast, with a firm white meat that is comparable to a fillet migon as it melts in your mouth. It is best when grilled but can also be baked or broiled and served with fresh shellfish, rice and veggies. Enjoy!
