I ordered a Browning A-Bolt, M-1000 Eclipse 270 WSM, Stainless Steel, Heavy barrel, Thumbhole stock, with the Boss. I ordered this back on March 28 of this year at Cabela's, I put $1400.00 down and have been waiting all year. Cabela's called me last week and said it has been pushed back again, so I jumped on the internet and found the same gun back in Pennsylvania. I called cabela's and cancelled their order and got the one in PA. It arrives tomorrow here in Tooele at the Hy and Mikes pawn shop. I got a leupold 6x18 to put on it and cant wait for next weekend to come so I can go shoot and site this gun in.... 130 gr bullet should do me good for both elk and deer this year.. Last year I got my elk using a 6mm with a 90gr. ballistic tip bullet and the elk walk about 30yds and dropped dead.
Anyone have a 270 wsm, I picked this gun for both deer and elk. I have a 300 Winchester Magnum now and that is way too big for deer and antelope in my book.

The 270 WSM is a great caliber. Should work awesome for your intended purposes. With that heavy barrel, I don't think I'd want to pack it very far though[cool]

I have been packing that 6mm with a heavy barrel the last three years (uncle's gun, he wont sell it) and I dont mind a bit walking for miles with it. small backpack and that gun and I will go all day long in search for elk... I dont move fast but can go all day up and down hills. I like the accuracy the heavy barrel's have...
My cousins wont walk with me because I just keep going and going. They will help me drag though... which is good. good luck this year,,

I bought a .338 for Elk about 10 years ago to go along with my .270 that I use for Deer and Lopes. After using it the first year, and liking it so much, it became my primary weapon. I have ended used that .338 for everything ever since and rarely use my .270! It does an amazing job on elk, deer and lopes! Of course, I handload and I'm using 185 grain bullets in it, which are like miniature lasers in that caliber.
I don't own a .270 wsm, but I know people that do and they love them! You will like it a lot!

I have never understood the arguement that a 300 win mag is "too much" gun. I guess the hole is a little bigger??
Having said this, I think you have purchased yourself a great gun. IMO the A-bolts are the only way to go. I love the action and reliability of my A-Bolt.
I use mine for every type of big game I hunt. I just got back from my WY Antelope hunt and it worked great.

[#6000bf]We shot 2 "average" goats. The length wasn't there but they definately has some good mass (6-6 1/2") bases. [/#6000bf]

I guess you must have been hunting in wyoming when I stopped by your house to show you my pronghorn. Mine was just 14", but I would have sworn when I shot at him he was a monster. Hard to judge, but next time I will be alittle smarter. I'm still happy with him though. Thanks for showing me around. I'll post pics later on a new thread.

It's the rifle in the pic at the top, that is a model of Browning just like a 700 is a remington and a model 70 is a wichester etc......
As for the 270 WSM, I have one in a Tikka and with 150 grain Barnes handloaded it will shoot faster than a 7 mm. mag. In my opinion the heavier bullets buck the wind better, they have a higher ballistic coefficent so they will hold there energy better at longer ranges also.
Check out the attatched pic. That's a 1500 pound Cape Eland I took in Africa this April with that same gun and load I mentioned above, clean through both shoulders.
