The fishing at Kirch was fair to good.

I'm renaming this place the Kirch Weed Management Area. The weeds have taken over the ponds making everything a pain in the arse. I should have had a weed stamp on my license the way things were going. You could set your watch by the wind kicking up at noon every day, which made tubing pretty much impossible in the afternoons. Just as predictable was it stopping at 7pm, so the campfire was perfect for a beer and a cigar.

Day one in the afternoon we quickly fished the dike before dark at Adams-McGill in the only one or two spots where the weeds were not too much of a problem-- had some success with small LMB. Chartreuse spinners with a trailing plastic worm did the trick.

Day two, in the morning, we tubed Adams-McGill and had random success in certain spots, mostly in the deep channels along the tulles, as everyone has suggested. Pretty much all LMB, several keepers, and two rainbows: a two and four pounder. Experimented with many different rigs, from bubble float and woolly bugger, Rapalas, Texas, whatever I had with me. Kept coming back to the spinners which worked equally well on bass, trout and weeds. The afternoon we were relegated to the shores thanks to the demon wind, so we setup on the dike on Clear Springs. Had some action with the spinners, but, as I heard in the campground, the power bait was almost criminal with how well it did on some pretty good sized rainbows. The boredom of bait fishing was offset by catching up on time spent staring at nothing.

Day three we hit Heymeadow in the morning in the tubes. A chartreuse Panther Martin created some of the best fishing I've ever had, if all I was fishing for was small rainbows. At one point I unhooked one little trout, let the line hang off the side of the tube and hooked another little guy before I had the first back in the water. The mosquitoes where everywhere on the surface and the fish were sucking them down-- The fly rod would have been a lot of fun, but I am thinking there's not much in that lake but hatchery 6 and 7 inchers. Saw Dan and the camo Jon boat out there having better luck in the a.m., in the deep water off the dam with atomic thingamajigs.

Would have liked to have gotten in some night fishing on Cold Springs. Will add that and the fly rod the itinerary next trip up there, but not before San Diego for some yellowfin I think.
