I have a buzz bait and a bunch of spinners. I've never caught anything on any of them. the fish will follow them, but never had one even try to bite on one.

That is what I like the most about unconventional fishing. They originally designed the buzzbait to make the topwater vibration and get attention. I can fish a Buzzbait down to 12 feet and still get bit on it by Bass.
I use several colors of the single blade and the double blade. Different depths and presentations will make all the difference.[cool]

Try changing up the speed. T2 is absolutely correct, buzz baits don't have to be topwaters. I will cast to deeper water and rip it to the surface and then let it sink and vary different retrieves until I trigger a bite.
To be honest I have never fished a buzz bait as a topwater. I will usually cast out as far as I can on a point and work the different depths with a jigging motion. If I pick up a bass then I will work that depth over and over with weighted wacky rigged plastics. I don't know if this helps you, I don't know where you are fishing .

I finally caught something on my buzz bait this morning. It was at the bigger retention pond this time. I was using my yellow/white buzzbait. It was on my 2nd cast and it bit. It was a bit hard to take the hook out. It's barb was bigger than I am used to :-(. But it was about a 2lb largemouth bass. It was pretty. I have some pics I might upload later. So I finally caught something on a buzzbait. Now I need to catch something on a spinnerbait sometime.

There are just as many applications for buzz baits are there are types of buzz baits. The only thing I have to add to this is that there are some conditions that ya'll might want to keep an eye out for when you go to throw your buzz baits.
1) Twilight or overcast
2) Suspended Blue gills
3) Shad schooling
4) Fish moving from the deep water to the shallows to feed.
Oh and the shallower the water the quiter the buzz bait should be. But that's just me talking here and there is so much more to that bait that can help make it more affective every time you use it.

It's kind of strange. Everybody uses buzzbaits, and a lot of great fish have been caught on them---but not by me.
For some reason, maybe lack of confidence?, I haven't caught fish one on a buzzbait. Not on top, as they're designed, not with varying the depth and style of retrieve.
Ironically, the biggest bass I've caught came on a spinnerbait buzzed on the surface. Go figure.
Anyway, what buzzbait are really good for, IMO, is as locator baits. Fish will smack them, but not really hit. When that happens, pick up a rod with a different suitable bait and go to it.
