Snell Knots

I thought I'd try and save a little money by making some of my own tackle. Snell knots seem really tough to get right when tying for wreck or maybe tuna fishing. I tried practicing with 60 pound mono. The traditional snell and even the uni both took a lot of work to get right. Do I need mono leader material? Also, does a snell knot offer an advantage over a hangman's or a clich knot when tying on a hook<br><br>

If using Octpus style hooks, I use a bumper snell. Everything else gets a standard snell or a uni knot. Practice with light leader material, i.e. 10 pound. For learning it is easier to work with than the heavy material. Also, practice on big hooks. Just my opinion. Heavier material is stiffer and tends to unwrap itself, can become a bit more difficult to learn with. <br><br>
