I got up on the narrows about 12:30 the water was running perfect that was the first thing I noticed. Then the next thing I noticed was all the people just getting out and walking and hiking and a few guys fishing. But low and behold the trash was every were beer cans and bottles and other misc trash.. Maybe the place should become artificial fly and lure only at least that would cut out most of the trash. Well we cleaned up what we could whats new.. The place was still muddy in spots but a lot of the roads were drying up. We decided to fish a little lower than usual and had no luck. We met a guy that was taking a survey about how the public felt about the new dam we had some choice words for the guy. And the canal company. He told us that's how almost everyone feels about the new dam and that people were bring up why is that the cannal company is not looking at conserving the water that just goes to waste. Why are they not looking at pipeing the cannals so the dont get the evaperation or losing thousands of gallons of water just because of the absorbtion of dirt made canals. They currently use. And many other great ideas. I hope the canal company actually reads the thoughts and ideas of people who took the time for the interveiw.
Well we jumped back in and the next stop was the camp ground were i just started slaying them a bakers dozen easely myself and a decent smallie too boot. My brother ended up with 6 or so and my friend caught a big nasty carp throwing a shakey headed jig with a worm hahaaaha.
Then back in the truck and up river we went were I continued to rip some lips. The only thing that would of made the day better is the damn wind would of just quit blowing. Not a bad first fishing trip for the year.
many fish and just a few wind knots. if your pole guy you wont know what a wind knot is if you use a rod then you know what im talking about. The Sad thing is that theres not many big fish left in the river... Theres way to many sclupin darting around for them to be there. my average was 14 inchs and a few up to 16 and the smallest under 12 Sad Sad Sad.... Just decade and half a go that river was just the shitzznick. O well thats what you get when peeps just cant let the big fish go. By the end of the day the river was coming up and from the look of the flow table the river will be running a little high for the next week or so if u plan on going up there plan on the river running in the high 5s or mid 6s. Well good luck.. If your into the eyes the water tempture was 42.
Gear I was using a 5wt fly rod floating line and sculpin paterns.. When they quit hitting the sculpins I did a quick change and threw leach with nypmph dropper.
Brother using a light spinning pole and blue fox spinners and small raps. very limited success. Switched to same fly set up as me and started catching.
The carp slayer med. pole and shaky head jigs and misc. plastic worms looking to lip a smallie or eyes. zero luck for him..

nice report. this whole week would be great to get up to the narrows. I wish they would just give up on that dang damn but i am afraid they will only give up when its built. I had never thought of them piping the canals i think the amount they loose from evaporation and what flows into the ground would be amazing. I heard once that 6 sq ft of water by the end of the line is only 2 ft.
I agree that the fishing isnt what it was 8 or 9 years ago but i think it has improved sense they cut it down to a 2 fish limit. Last year i saw some great fish pulled out but like you said not very many released. I wish they would start planting it with browns again i use to love to go up and catch them, i know there still there but you dont seem to catch the monsters anymore. How were the roads up I would like to head up later this week and would like to take the car if its not to sticky.

I was there the day before. Posted on the Utah board. Caught 8 and my Dad got 5, nothing of any size though. Noticed a lot of trash like you mentioned. I always carry a few Wal-Mart sacks everytime I go fishing and pick up trash, so I got my two sacks full as well!!! A little while longer and we will be into the Smallies/Wallies/Big Trout!!!

I've been trying to decide if it's worth the drive up there tomorrow, and I think you convinced me. I have to say, I wouldn't be too Sad if they made it artificials only.

Where is this 'Narrows?' The only 'narrows' I am aware of are on CJ Strike Reservoir. Did I gather these 'Narrows' you refer to are in Utah? What river? What dam? Am I really that lost in Idaho?

i went up to fish the bear river today. I was going to fish around fairview but it was so muddy i fished about a hour and went up the narrows. We went were the water comes out of the damn. We were targeting walleyes, but we didnt get any we managed 2 browns and i did snag something big it came to the surface it looked like a eye but it could of been a carp it was a ways away, but i would like to think it was a eye. either way the hook came loose. The water up the narrows was low and clear. We didnt catch much but great day just to be out.

i am going to try in the morning again, The water went up wend. to like 1400 ft per sec So it will probly take a couple days of low water to get rid of all the mud. That is if it stays down its at 800 right now thats getting up there again.

That is typical during the weekend around "Walleye Time" for them to do that!!! Has anyone been up to see what the ice conditions on the lake are? I was up there on the 14th and it was still covered and looked thick (didnt venture out to investigate). With the warming temps and the high winds that the canyon produces it shouldnt be too much longer I would imagine!!!
