I hate to be posting, because that means i'm back. The fishing was very slow, plus rain then mud, but like I said I can catch steelies out of the bathtub, I only landed one on my drift rig, and caught three and lost one on my fly rod, which i'm a newby to, so all and all it was steelhead fishing at it's finest, and can't wait to get back up for next weekend.

Thanx. Yah, just one or two of the smallest is all it takes. I seen you was fishing dutch oven a couple of weeks ago, I haven't fished that hole for years, but I hear it has changed, what seems to be the best part of it these days.

Nice fish RB1! Wish I could have stayed and fished with ya. Looks like you did pretty good on the flyrod! I should have taken mine it looks like. Did you hook all those in that same spot? If the water's low, it can't be beat!

You should have stayed longer. The lower river was in good shape Friday and Saturday. Four of us (all rookies) landed 14 and we didn't fish very long on Saturday. By the way where is Dutch Oven?

Ya, where's the pics?[sly] Sounds like a good day! Dutchoven is in the canyon about 200 yards upriver from X-hole which is where all the trailers are parked w/ a bathroom there.

Thats where we were fishing. A guy that has fished that hole since he was a kid told us it was the Falls Hole, and down river there are some rapids that are called dutch oven. I guess every hole on the river has more than one name depending on who is fishing it.
I have attached a picture of the 8 fish we brought home, we let the rest go. The picture is not very good but Windriver will at least believe we caught some fish. The biggest fish was 32 inches and the highlight of the trip was the guy who caught it has been trying to land a steelhead for years and finally this trip landed four. One of the other guys had a 30 plus inch fish on but it took him under the rocks and cut his line after a long fight.
Like I said all of us are rookies. I caught my first steelhead last year and one of the other guys caught his first last year. The other two guys caught their first this year.

Yes we were at Spring Creek. I wish we would have met you, we pulled in Friday afternoon were you still there at that time? Here is another picture of the biggest one we landed. I am about to the stage to start learning other places to fish the river. There are too many people competing for the best holes in the narrows. We left Dutch Oven probably by 10:00 AM so others could fish it. I have a drift boat so I will start floating and fishing some of the spots up river from Spring Creek.
It seems like you need to catch a fish or two to get the confidence to try holes that are less popular.

We pulled in Friday afternoon and left Saturday by 3:00 PM. I caught two fish Friday in the daylight and the rest were caught after dark from midnight until 8:00 AM Saturday.
We could have held the hole all day Saturday but we were all satisified and content to let some others have it. I didn't even wet a line after 8:00 AM Saturday. I had landed 5 fish and had quite a few others on plus I have been sick so I took a nap until everyone else was ready to go.
It was a great trip for us and we all learned alot. I learned that I need to buy better hooks because I had alot of fish get off after fighting them a while. I bought some Eagle Claw Laser Sharp salmon/steelhead hooks and a guy told us it is better to use a finer wire hook because it will penetrate better. I did alot better until I ran out of the Gamakatsu hooks. What hooks do you guys have the best luck with?
Thanks,
SteelFisher

I have fished with you enough to believe you [laugh]. I am just sorry I'm not going to get out much for another month. After that I will start putting in my fishing time.

Congrats. My Dad and I are planning on going next weekend. It will be my second trip (didn't catch any last year), and my Dads first steelhead trip. We are planning on going near Ellis thats where I went last year and I have all the right gear that the people who actually caught some fish were using last year. But I didn't know people fished for steelhead after dark. If you are willing to let me know the night time techniques I would be very interested. I have all the helgies, pink worms and corkies and the normal steelhead stuff, does this stuff work at night as well?? Any ways I just hope I at least catch one this year. PM me if you want. THanks
