Boston’s inner-harbor bays were the most productive during this past week. Hingham, Quincy and Dorchester Bays had early activity with bass feeding on herring and silversides. Bluefish showed up in the outer-harbor and off Cohasset scattering the mackerel schools.

Two of B-Fast’s vessels, BAY FLY and B-FAST, fished Boston Wednesday through Saturday. Early each morning, bass could be found pushing the bait to the surface. Small poppers and sliders worked well cast to the breaking fish using the long rod. Chartreuse Half & Halfs in size 3/0 and size 4/0 epoxy-head herring patterns presented on 400 grain Orvis DepthCharge line.

Most bass were school-size between 20 and 27- inches, however, between 2 and 8 small keepers up to 32 inches were part of the catch each day. By far, the best producer of keeper bass were the large herring patterns on the fly rod and Texas-rigged white Slug-gos fished on spinning gear. After the morning feeding foray ended, working structure was most productive which resulted is most of the keeper size bass.

This week Wayne Pearce’s group from Vernon, NJ and BJ Morgan’s group from Malden, MA had some of the best top-water action of the spring season. Both groups fished the harbor for two days and had multiple keeper days each day. As is typical, the dropping tide was the most productive. On Saturday, BJ Morgan’s group landed the two biggest bass of the week—38 and 37 inches both tipping the scales to 25 pounds. Both bass took surface presented white Slug-gos.
