im getting ready to get into saltwater fishing, I need a new rod, so I was wondering, if I got a saltwater rod, could I also use it for freshwater. I've been told that you cant really use freshwater rods for saltwater because of corrosion, but how about saltwater poles in freshwater. id like to have 1 that can do both.

no rod will hold up in salt water if you do no clean it up after use. I fish with fresh water tackle in salt water any time I feel like it, but clean with fresh water when I finish.

You can use any rod for fresh or salt water. Rinse, rinse, rinse! If you don't, ANY rod or reel will corrode quickly.

Saltwater will screw up just about anything. Rods are easy to clean, I wash in fresh water and wipe down with silcon spray. I have rods that cost anywhere from a few dollars from a pawn shop too several hundred custom made so I take care of them to protect my investment.
Best advice is to find a fishing buddy who has been around and get some advice. I am 62 years old and i still pay a guide sometime when i need to learn something new. My best advice is just to do it!! Fish everyday you can and very soon you will Not be new to the salt water.
Reels on the other hand are not so easy to clean, when you wash them in fresh water not all the salt gets cleaned out of the small spaces and WD40 helps and sometimes you just need to take them apart and clean proper like.

i think my uncle would be good for that, he is a commercial fisherman. I've fished my whole life pretty much, well not so much lately, its been years since ive been. but ive never fished in saltwater so this is a first for me. I got a new rod and reel yesterday and pretty excited to try it out.

What type of fishing are you going to be doing, from what (beach, boat, pier), and what type of outfit did you buy?

Pretty much all the rods built in the last 20 years have stainless or Fuji guides on them which are rust resistant. Reel seats are not - so they need to be washed/wiped with WD40 or LPS1. Too many times, I have seen saltwater impregnation into reel levelwinds because not enough lithium grease was used.
Today's equipment is far better than that made 50 years ago when I first started fishing.

I'm going saltwater fishing this weekend for the first time too. I don't think my rods or reels will ever get wet. I'm only going to be on the beach or a bank. Will I still need to clean them as well?

Yea definitely, My husband said most up to date rods and reels are rust resistant. You should be able to switch from Salt to Fresh water without a problem!
