I realize that some areas are ristricted to the use of only barbless hooks, and I was wondering if any one had found any uses for barbless hooks.
the only one I have found is during heated bites with gills, crappie and perch during the summer months using a cane pole. you haul them in as fast as you can drop the line, and as soon as you flop the fish in the boat or on shore you are free to grab another fish...

[cool] Dave , when we fish in Canada, we have to use barbless hooks ! We don't lose to many because of the barbless , you just have to keep tension on it all the time ! It's alot easier taking the hooks out of those 40 inch pike !!

they say that barbless hooks are better because when anglers take the hooks out of the fish, it doesnt mutilate their mouths and other things that may be hooked.

If the law requires it then that would be the use for it and if you ever get one in your cheek or hand past the barb it helps not to have that barb.
I also agree if your fishing most species catch and release it's better to use barbless. Ron

this past winter, there was a guy who left his tipup out over night, and all the next day with out checking on it, when he finaly got around to attending his tipup, the line was busted.
of corse this means there is a pike swiming around with a hundred foot of line hanging out of his mouth.
I would emagine that if he had a barbless hook another fish swallow would push the hook though. the way it stands now, I imagine the pike will die of starvation. For this reason I can see why barbless would work for pike.
I am not happy that the tipup was not attended properly, even once an hour could have prevented this from happening. [pirate]

TOTALLY believe in barbless hooks but prefer to squish the barbs instead of buying them that way. Reason, you get that little bump from the squished barb. When using a fly off the bend, this is a good thing.
As for using barbless, it means handling the fish less so all for that, even the ones kept. Not bruised. BUT, get a hook in a human and that barbless idea takes on a new meaning.
I think it is more sporting too.
