I usually use small rooster tails or lazy ikes but lately with the water temperature getting cooler, I've had lots of luck with my fly rod and using dry flies like a #12 royal wulff or small wet flies, streamers and wooly buggers. It seems the fish are slowing down and eating more tiny bugs rather than small bait fish which rooster tails mimic. If you don't have a fly rod tie a small fly or really tiny lure like a 1/65oz spoon on the end of your rooster tail. The rooster tail will allow you to cast further while the tiny lure or fly will trail behind the rooster tail and catch most of the fish.

When I go that rout, I will use a clear plastic bubble with a reduced weight leader tied off the lure end at a lenth from 2-6 feet depending on what depth I am trying to reach.
I have even used as much as an eight foot leader.... [signature]

For panfish such as bluegill and perch, I would try a plug or lure that floats. Small Hula Poppers work good as do a lot of plugs like the small Rapala deep runners. I personally like the Hula Popper. Just cast it in fairly close to the bank and jig and dance it around. If you are after crappie, I always like using jigs. I have a black leadhead with yellow feathers that has been tearing them up for years. I also have an old rooster tail (nothing special) that has brought in many a fish of all species. I just cast it out and retrieve at a slow to moderate rate. God Bless and happy fishing. Dave [fishin]

If its a little windy I will usually tie 2 small jigs about a foot apart under a bobber (clear) and cast it down wind along the bank 5 to 10 feet out and let the ripples on the surface of the water do the work, It makes the jigs hop under the water very well. Adjust your depth if not getting any bites about a foot at a time til and try for about 15 minutes if no bite go down another foot and repeat this until you reach the bottom.
If nothing was biting on that jig change colors and repeat the process described above. If you want to use live bait minnows, small red worms, grubs or even maggots (store bought) are all excellent live baits for pan fish. Make sure you use light tackle with small fishing line, you probably only 2lb - 4lb test line when fishing for pan fish. [signature]

You have a couple of options to shorefish for panfish using artificial lures:
1) Berkley Gulp nightcrawlers or earthworms: Technically an artificial bait, this stuff outfishes the real deal...without the mess. You can fish them like live bait under a bobber OR fish them like a drop shot rig. I was able to provoke my first fish of the season this year by jigging an unweighted Gulp earthworm up and down in front of its nose by its nest that I spotted by sight fishing. I was amazed that the other anglers on the pond literally walked by these fish that were in plain sight! 2) Small artificial jigs. I'm talking tiny jig heads here. 1/64 to 1/16 oz. You can try your luck casting them individually, as droppers, or under a bobber. As far as the bodies go, experiment. Tubes, hair, plastic, grubs, Gulp, whatever...they all get strikes. 3) Small spoons. I'm constantly accidentally catching panfish when casting out small spoons for trout. Tiny inline spinners and spinnerbaits will catch them as well. 4) Flies. I've seen fly fisherman and spinners catch panfish on poppers and dry flies. I am going to try to tie a wet fly as a dropper when I do jigging this year and see how that works. [signature]

I used to use alot of lures over the years but have switched to almost all plastic baits and catch every species of fish I got after. I make my own soft plastics in many colors and are all custom colors and baits.
I put them under a bobber and let them just float along or reel them in slow and watch the bobber for any strikes. I also just throw them out and reel them back in slowly and twitch the rod tip. Attached are some bluegills and largemouth bass I caught this winter ice fishing and now the ice is melting off and the open water is producing fish to heres a 18" lake trout I caught off my small panfish bait. opon water and warm weather trout now and bass and panfish soon. bring on spring and summer Good luck fishing and FISH ON [signature]

Nice fat bluegil, the bass looks around 12" still a funfish to catch.
What are your baits grub with tails ? I've tried a few times but never got a bite with plastic except a pre rigged worm that was very small and about 4" long with spinner and beads in front. [signature]
