I took Pat Ryan (Basserrt) out today for a short fishing trip. I wanted to look for stripers and bass in the lake, but the birds weren't working and didn't see any baitfish in the large area that we started in. Actually, because of the fog, we stopped at a dock and crappie fished for a while before looking for the bass. Should have stayed on crappie all morning as it turns out. We landed 18 crappie on the first dock.

After a fruitless hour of looking for stripers and bass, we switched back to crappie fishing and had a great morning. We quit just after noon today and our total crappie catch was 39 with several fish over 13" and up to 13.75" long. Not too many short fish today. Some of the fattest fish that I have seen lately.

We also caught 4 yellow bass, 1 channel cat, 1 drum, and 2 bluegills to go along with the crappie. Some crappie were shallow and some were deep. Docks and bluffs and channel edges were the structures that we fished today. Caught fish off all 3 types of structure. I looked at the flowrate before leaving this morning and it was 88,000cfs, but is supposed to slow down to 76,000 cfs by Wednesday. Hopefully, in a few more days, the flowrate will get back to normal and the better fishing will return. But the fishing has been good with the high flowrate, but I just hate having to fight the current all the time. Many places that hold fish I haven't even fished in over a month.

Pat caught the most crappie today as he had the hot color on, and I was stubborn and wouldn't change. Actually, it is just important to know what they won't hit as what they will sometimes. emoBig
This is one student that has turned out well. If he ever gets a boat, we will have to restrict him to Nickajack lake. I really enjoyed the morning, Pat, even though our bass fishing thingy turned out to be sour. We will do it again really soon. emoBig
emoGeezer

Almost forgot to tell how we caught the fish. 1/16 oz jigs mostly and early on the count was 4 to 6 and after we quit fooling with the bass, the crappie that we targeted were in a place that you needed to fish deep and the count was 15-28 mostly. Pearl/chartreuse bg shads were the hot lure today. I caught several on albino shad stubby butts on the first dock, but then went to different bg shads on the deeper structures and the albino shad that was so hot last Friday was a bust today. The fish wanted pearl/chartreuse.

Ever changing. Always having to figure out what, where, why. It can tire a feller out. emoBig
