Bottom fishing winch vs. krystal fishing reels
#1
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I need your opinion on this one. I have recently puchased a 22.5' panga boat and have since had some good troll fishing with it. I'm contemplating on trying out bottom fishing. I have tried it manually but it's no picknick. That's why I want to get some help in the form of a Peterson bottom fishing winch or a krystal xl 621 fishing reel. I would like to hear your opinion and experiences with these so I can make an informed decicion. I thank you in advance.

My first question is how deep are you fishing? If you're in 150 feet or less, there's no need for an electric reel. You just need to get a conventional reel with a high speed gear ratio. Something Like an Avet or one of those Diawas with like a 6:1 gear ratio. You'll get the fish up off the bottom fast, and they've got plenty of power to lock down the drag on large grouper and snapper.

If you had to get an electric reel, you could always purchase a Penn Senator 114 and get an electric adapter for it that mounts to the side. It's slow, but it's torquey, it's works, and it's not terribly expensive. It will also last you a long time.

For bottom fishing, you need a pro high gear ratio Jigging Reel which the gear ratio is about 5.0:1 is the best. Trolling is different, the gear ratio is usually under 2.0:1. You could choose a two speed big game reel for both trolling and jigging.
