Going out on Utah Lake tomorrow
#1
Planning to go out on Utah Lake this weekend. I have not fished there in a couple of years. I was wondering if anyone had fished there recently and if so are they willing to share what bait/technique is working the best to catch catfish at this time of year.

Check the Perch in Bear Lake thread. There are some great tips for using carp, yellow perch, or white bass for bait for good catfish at Utah Lake. I have always found the late afternoon (Like about 7:00) to around 10:30 or 11:00 to be the best time to fish for the big cats. You can catch them in the morning or the middle of the day too, but its a lot harder and slower fishing.

Hey Cat_Man, have ya fished the Jordan river to the North of the lake? I stopped by this afternoon (Lehi) on my way back from a job. Didn't catch anything but saw some really big cats right on the surface. Now fishing with trout bait may have been the reason ..... but I just had to soak a hook, it was too hot to work!

nIGHTCRAWLER 2 FETT Under a bobber has worked wonders for me. find a rocky shoreline and let in sit not more than 5 feet out from the rocks. Usually 1 to 3 feet is the best.

GOOD FISHIN TO YA!!!!!!!!

Yes, I have fished the Jordan where it exists Utah Lake, and just north of the pumphouse. I used worms and carp meat. Fished for almost 3 hours from 6 to 8:45 pm. I got nothing with the carp meat. Caught several small mudcats and one tiny little 6 inch channel cat on the worms about 3 feet below a bobber. Fishing was pretty slow. This was about 3 weeks ago. The fish you see swimming on or near the surface probably are not catfish. There are a lot of huge carp in the river and they love to cruise around just below the surface. carp have a whisker on each side too, so I can see how you'd confuse them if you didn't look closer. I've never seen a catfish near the surface like that, but I guess I could be wrong. The bait that has worked best for me on Utah Lake is definitely carp meat, but I've been told white bass meat works better. Good luck!

Hey Cat_man, I guess I needed to be more precise about the location. SR 73 were the Jordan crosses the roadway. I think it is in Lehi, but it my just be Utah county. I stopped by today on the way home also. But this time i brought some bait with me. Those were carp on the surface, the water there is so muddy it was hard to tell the other day. But today I got a good look at them, I hooked up with 2 of them. About 5 pounds each a lot of fun they are. If ya want to catch them I put em back for ya [sly]. Still didn't catch any cats but only fished for an hour as I had to get home for the dogs. Some kids there did pretty good on mud cats. Will ba back out there Weds working and will take some more gear and spend a little time. I know there's something big waiting for me there I can feel it LOL

Hey road,

[Wink] I've never fished right there by the highway, but I know where you're talking about. I've stopped to check it out, and it looks pretty good to me. Several years ago I fished where what is now Thanksgiving Point. It used to be a farm owned by my friend's grandfather. We have several people fishing with worms, and catching lots of cats, including one that looked like it was around 15 lbs. that a kid brought in and snapped his line right at the shore. Like I said it was like 10 years ago, but that river is full of channel cats from Utah Lake all the way up through Salt Lake, whereever you can get access. Wish I had a boat so I could go out in Utah Lake and find some
"secret" channel cat spots!

Hello,

I tried fishing the Jordan around 3300 S, kinda spooky if you ask me. Anyways, I had one bite all day and I saw a few carp swimming around. Also tried Millcreek before it enters and river and was unsuccessful there too!!! So here is a question, is the Jordan better on the side where the pumps are running or on the side without the pumps that just has a small dam? Also has anyone ever fished closer the slc airport on the Jordan....I tried it once and didn't catch a thing, but it looks like good catfish water.

catfish77, What do you mean spooky? I live close to that part of the Jordan (3300S.) So I have fished it alot and I've caught some nice channel cats, walleye, white bass, in between 3900S. and 3300S. I even saw somebody catch 2 pretty good size rainbows in the Jordan just down stream from were little cottonwood dumps in. (In between 3900S.and4500S.)
