List your rigs!
#1
Hey guys,

Thought it would be an interesting topic to see what tackle everybody uses for different species/conditions/presentations. It might give some of the newer anglers a place to start depending on what they're after.

Mine (currently used to hunt stripers mostly, but I use each for different species depending on what I'm after on any given day):

7' med-hvy spinning rod with 20lb braid. Used for topwater, trolling, and cut bait Carolina rigs for stripers/cats. Carolina rigs use 12lb fluorocarbon leader, usually 2-4 feet long. I don't attach a leader for the topwater, but I have considered it for trolling.

6'6" med spinning rod with 8lb fluorocarbon. Used for trout, dropshotting, smaller baits, or anything else I don't use the 7 footer for. Mostly lighter baits, or when fish are extremely line shy. It's a good all-around setup for me.

(FUTURE) A (mostly) dedicated trolling setup. Probably a 7'-8' med-hvy to hvy casting rod with 50lb braid and baitcasting reel...maybe one with a line counter, but I also want to use this for throwing heavier baits as well. Any suggestions?? Prob need a 25lb fluorocarbon leader if I choose to do so.

And also, what knot do you guys use for attaching braid directly to a fluorocarbon leader? I can tie an awesome blood knot, but it seems to slip because of the coating on the braid...I've heard the Albright knot is good, but I've never tried it.

I checked out the AC Plug site the suggest some super glue to fuse the mono to the braid.

Sounds good, my arsenal is about the same..
So what do you use for schooling fish that won't bite?
You might want a lite setup 6lb line with little or no weight.
Small lead head jigs and a chunk of anchovy or slider rig.

A Carolina rig or a dropper loop is also effective for deeper water fish. Best bet, keep up on BFT and go to a NV Striper Club weigh-in or a meeting.

A striper club meeting is the very next thing I'm doing. I can't wait... From what Chad said, it sounds like a good group of folks.

Schoolies who won't bite, I'd still go with my 8lb fluorocarbon. I use Seaguar Invisx and it's got about the same diameter and stretch as 6lb mono. Combined with the medium power fast action rod, I can throw even 1/16oz jigs pretty well. I don't feel comfortable going any lighter, just in case a larger fish decides to hit.

Next time out though, I am going to be trying the jighead/anchovy combo. It's one thing I just never have gotten around to doing.

For braid to mono or flouro knots, I always use a bic lighter to burn the end of the braid. You have to be careful to keep the flame away from the rest of your line and your knot, but the ball that is formed from the melting braid keeps the knots from slipping. I use a lighter any time I tie knots with braid.

The Blood knot is fine. I prefer the Albright knot. Just a little easier for me to tie.

Check out this awesome knot tying resource- everything is animated:

As for my striper rigs, I use a 12 foot Diawa Power-Cast rod with a 4/0 captains choice bait-caster spooled with 30lb big game when I am trolling wake-baits, and an 11 foot Eliminator Surf rod matched with a cheapo Sea-Lion Spinning reel with 20lb Big Game for swimbaits and the like.

Someday I'll be rich, and all my rigs will cost $500 a piece. Until then, Ill work with what Ive got.

I use some of my bass fishing rigs for smaller striper fishing (crankbaits, small topwaters, etc).

[cool]I use several outfits for stripers. It all depends on the size of the fish targeted. For the large swimbaits I use a 7' Ugly stik with a Penn 955 International baitcaster w/17lb test mono, a 7' Quantum with a 400 series Shimano Corvalus w/20lb test mono, and a 7' Ugly stik with a Penn 4000 series Sargus spinning reel w/14lb test mono. These handle the bulk of the trout imitating swimbaits. I use two lighter 12lb test outfits(one spinning and one baitcaster) on 7' rods for a little challenge on the big stripers. All smaller stripers on 8 or 6lb test spinning and baitcasting rigs. I like a few "arrows in the quiver" when I go for the linesides. I will also take out either an 8wt or 6wt flyrod when the conditions are good. I haven't tried braid yet but will try it soon. I have read that a uni knot to uni knot works great to connect to mono or fluoro.

Hello Everyone,

I use a 7'6 cabela's trolling rod one one and an 7' ugly stick cat fish rod on the other. They both have cabelas deptmaster linecounter reels spooled with suffix 65 lb braid. I also put a lighter to the end of tag in knots. Just enough to mushroom the end. For casting I use a browning six river rod 8'6 and browning bait caster spooled with berkeley 20 big game mono. for bait fishing I use abu garcia's 6500 c3's spooled with 14lb suffix mono. Fished carolina style. For top water I will use abu's 103 spinning reels with 10 or 12 pound mono suffix. I also use abu garcia's round reels 6500 c3 and 6600 c4's .

I have the Browning 8'6 MH six rivers spinning and I'm real happy with it. With the long length I can really load the rod up and cast a good distance without having to swing the rod around to much. I use it mainly for crankbaits and it sets the treble hooks better on the stripers with the MH action. I also have the Fenwick 8'3 HMX ML which I also use for crankbaits. With it being a ML I get a lot more action on my lures and it seems I get more bites too, but I lose more fish with it too. It doesn't set the treble hooks like the Browning. I can use much lighter line on it and it does cast a lighter lure further. It also has aluminum oxide guides which I definately like over ceramic or any other guide that isn't metal. When those ceramic guides get banged around they break and you can't use them. Aluminum guides just bend and you can still use the rod.
My favorite rod I have is a Fenwick Elite Tech 6'9 M. I got this rod at Pro Tackle and its the nicest rod I've ever owned. That store has a lot of sweet rods you can't find anywhere else.

Interesting stuff! I definitely have plans to get a conventional reel/rod combo so I can handle the 50lb braid I want on there, and some larger baits.

In response to some of the above knot discussion, I tried a knot yesterday while attaching a 12lb fluorocarbon leader to the 20lb braid. It's called the Seaguar Knot (I had never heard of it before). Apparently the knot Seaguar recommends for attaching fluorocarbon to mono. Here's the link: http://www.netknots.com/html/seaguar_knot.html

It went through the guides very smoothly when casting and retrieving, and when I got hung up, I actually pulled the 24ft. pontoon we were in while trying to get free. The knot kept holding while I was pulling and eventually it was the leader that snapped, about 4 inches from the knot. I was pretty impressed and probably will continue to use it as it's super easy to tie.

Oh, and thankfully, the lure that got hung up wasn't very expensive...otherwise, I would be more mad at losing the lure, rather than impressed about a knot...

Penn Jigmaster 500L paired with a medium action 7 foot Ugly Stick Tiger rod. 20 lbs mono currently but I have a spare spool with 30 lbs mono. I love the quick change spool feature of this reel.

I tried out that combo, and I enjoyed the Ugly Stick Tiger. That rod has nice action, and will never break.
