It’s been a long time since I’ve posted any fishing reports. I believe I fished maybe 6 or 7 times all of last year and three of those were getting ready for Cracker-fest.
I hope to be able to contribute more in 2010.
I’ve fished a few times the past two weekends and will combine my report. I was in hopes of finding the slabs on the river. I felt confident I could at least go and find a few for the table. Last Friday I fished alone and decided to test my theory and go to the river and get some slabs for dinner. I could not find a crappie out there. I fished the bluffs, deep docks, deep structure and the mouth of creeks. I found a couple nice Small mouth, a few Large Mouth and a couple of drum but no table food. Last Saturday and Sunday, Dad and I decided to fish Wolf Tever. We found great numbers (mostly on community docks) but we found them scattered on lay downs also (appear to be in transition to spawning areas). All fish were caught using the 1/32nd jig with BG pearl and most on a 5 to 8 count.
Friday evening Dad and I put in late and fished Wolf Tever for the last couple hours of light. The community fish had all but transitioned out or weren’t hungry. We did catch a few on lay downs and docks and then we hit Polo’s brush were we pulled out one nice slab (1st TARP) of the year. We were instructed to another location where there were 5 good keepers to put in the well however the count was about a 15 and we didn’t even need a hook to catch these. It took about 15 seconds to allow the 5 gallon bucket to empty and place the fish in the net. Thanks Mark (Polo)!
This past Saturday morning, Dad and I tried the river again and we had the same results. However we did find a wad of yellow bass on our way back to Scull Island (in the mouth of the creek, shallow) and several of them went in the live well for supper. I figured the Crappie were there close too but never caught the first one.
I think due to the flow and lower water temp, the Crappie that I caught on a regular basis two years ago have moved into the bays seeking warmer water and following the bait fish. However I am pretty stubborn thus I had to try the river twice, knowing we could at least catch a few fish in the creek. We fished hard till about 1but with little show for it, we decided to take out and put back in at Wolf Tever and finish the day. We fished 1/32nd with BG in pearl and Opening Night with a little garlic on the tail. We found a few fish scattered on lay-downs. Very few at the community docks and a few more on Polo’s brush. We decided to venture further back to try a few more docks and lay downs but found no good pattern or many keepers. On the way back out to try the brush and docks one last time, we ended up having motor issues. The carburetor just slowed and would do nothing but idol. The Lord sent us an Angel to help rescue us and his name was Polo. I’ve exchanged PM’s and talked with him briefly from a distance in the past but on this day I was going to finally get to meet and talk with him up close and personal! Thanks Mark!
After a tow back to Wolf Tever our adventure was over but we do have a few fish to fry up tonight and a boat that will be taken in for a tune-up.
Thanks again Mark for taking the time to help a couple in need!
