Hey everyone!

The board's been quiet for a bit, so I figured I'd ask what's going on? Anyone been out fishing recently? Successes? Failures?

Last weekend was pretty much a bust for me and Chad, with the exception of 2 carp, 1 channel cat, and a 1lb striper at Boulder Harbor...haven't been out since then...

I have been to busy with studying to get out and get some fishing in. How did you catch the carp? Do carp normally bite in the winter/cold weather? I like catching carp because they seem to be fairly easy to catch/attract and still are fun to wrestle in. I caught carp in the summer when they were jumping out of the water but have not attempted them yet in the winter.

I use my own homemade carp bait (there are tons of variations you can find on the web, and I have yet to try even close to all of them). Carp are strange fish...very smart, and a lot of times, very hard to catch, especially the big ones. It's all in the presentation. For example, when we were out, I dropped down my bait into a school of a few carp that were below the boat. One of them swam over to my bait, leaned to the side (as if it was LOOKING at my bait), and then swam away. I pulled up my bait, and just the very tip of the hook was exposed out of the ball of doughbait. I'm convinced the carp saw the tip of the hook, and decided it was a bad idea to eat it!! lol To be honest, I've been fishing for carp in Mead for a little bit, and they are very smart, wary fish overall. They'll eat pretty much anything that normally gets dropped in the lake around the harbors, especially bread, corn, hotdogs, etc...and of course my special bait. But in my experience, they can see fishing line, hooks, sinkers, swivels, and anything else you throw in there that doesn't look natural. My best success has been with 8lb. fluorocarbon line (or 10-15lb braid with a minimum of 10ft fluorocarbon leader), hook, and bait...that's it...fished on a slack line so there is a minimum of resistance when they pick it up. And even then, you only hook about 50% of the ones who pick it up because they spit it out at the slightest feel of anything they're not used to.

But when you get into a good one...they'll give you one hell of a fight! Carp fishing is some good, relaxing fun, and really a challenge trying to figure out what they want and how they want it...especially when you can see those huge monsters right below you!!

i went with my girlfriend the other day, super windy, like a hurricane. got several bites, only landed one 1 pound striper.

I used to fish for carp in the des moines river in Iowa when i was like 10. i would put an egg sinker bout 3 feet above a size 4 or 2 hook at the end and then slide canned corn kernals up the hook till its completely covered. i would even push a kernal over the eye of the hook. i caught some that were longer than me

Well the weekend is over and I have fish in my freezer....once again. You may have seen the cat from last week but I eat it.

So, I took my sister and her husband out with Capt'n J today. This is a trip to book! We were on fish within a half hour of trolling spot start, lost a good LM bass and got a some nice stripers on the troll as well.

Moved around for a little while and set up a chum.
Finally after a few scratch fish we put together a pattern and stuck some fish.

No pics but all were cookie-cutter fish 15" to 18"

Been out every Tuesday and a lot of Wednesdays recently to Sunset Park. They've been dropping trout in there every week. Fishing has been good and now the bass look like they're starting to stage for the spawn. There was a school of ten or more in the shallows last time I was out.
