Alabamas Bonner Point Public Ramp Reopens Tomorrow
#1
The Bonner's Point public boat ramp on Lake Jordan in Elmore County will reopen Thursday April 1, after months of renovation work. This project was funded through a Sportfish Restoration Grant, which is supported by excise taxes on fishing equipment and outboard motor fuel. Additional funding was generated through the sale of state fishing licenses.

In August 2009, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) began work on several improvements to the Bonner's Point. These improvements include: a new 60-foot wide launching slab capable of accommodating up to four boaters at a time, a 40-foot wide entrance road with space for a "make-ready" area, and a new exit road to improve the flow of traffic and alleviate long launch lines that were a common occurrence at this facility in the past.

According to WFF Fisheries Development Coordinator Damon Abernethy, there are more improvements in the works, but none will require the complete closure of the facility. "This summer two new courtesy piers will be added, the handicapped parking area will be doubled in size, the parking area will be re-striped, and security lighting installed," Abernethy said. "There is also a proposal to expand the primary parking area by about 40 spaces to accommodate the heavy use this public reservoir receives from anglers and pleasure boaters."

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama's natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
